Creully is the seat of an ancient barony, whose origin may be tracked back to the formation of Normandy in the Xth century.
In 1107, the domain of Creully was transfered to Robert of Gloucester, the natural son of Henry I and Sybille Corbet.
The municipality of Creully purchased the castle in 1946.

I have discussed this with the Colonel of the Regiment, the Chairman of the Association and the Regimental Secretary.
The Creully Memorial was discussed at the committee meeting of the Regimental Association, which took place last week in London, and it was also agreed that the Association will provide money to engrave the names of those who died and be responsible for its continuing upkeep and insurance liability.
November nine members of the Creully Club are assembled in the bar of the Roebuck Inn.

We also fitted in a visit to the Memorial at Creully where we were pleased to note that it appeared to have been cleaned and repaired although the caps from some of the flagpoles were still missing.
HHQ very promptly arranged with the Mayors office at Creully for the wreaths to be removed at the appropriate time and also for the finial caps to be replaced.
Also the Mayor and Commune of Creully would be disappointed if there wasn't attendance on the 6th June each year and it would be a sad reflection on the 4th/7th RDG if this did not occur.

Your Secretary was made an honorary citizen of Creully with a presentation of a very attractive medallion by the Deputy Mayor, Madame Martine Tanniou on behalf of the Mayor, M Roger Levert who was in hospital.
The Pilgrimage to Creully this year was markedly different from that of 2001 in that so many more members and wives travelled from the pick-up points in Aldbourne and Portsmouth.
It was a salutary experience for someone like me, who was born after the war, to meet courteous, jokey and self-deprecating former soldiers, who sometimes gave the impression they could not quite believe their luck at having survived to old age.

To the north of Caen the Mill Route follows the valleys of the Seulles, Mue and Thue rivers and stretches as far as the Creully canton between Caen and Courseulles.
They remain of interest, even if they are no longer working, and whilst they are sometimes not visible from the road you can easily get off the beaten track to explore the landscape and local habitat.
Along the length of this route, you will find sites worth visiting - massive farms, religious buildings, châteaux and manors such as Creully, Fontaine Henry, Thaon, Brécy and picturesque villages such as Reviers and Amblie which bear witness to the rich architectural heritage of the area.

Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery landed with his HQ staff in Normandy shortly after D-day and occupied the Chateau Creully grounds, a Parisian summer residence The British had moved quickly inland on D-day over running the chateau's German occupants in a short and decisive fire fight in the garden woods to the right.
The chateau is a summer residence once again and can be visited with private arrangements.
Close by is the Creully Castle with its dominating tower from where Edward R. Morrow and Howard Marshall broadcast the battle news back to the States and the UK, respectively.
