After 25 years of being rented out for farming and private residences, the property began to be developed into a retreat and conference center for the church under the Maclean Estate committee which was appointed by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
As needs have been identified the Crieff Hills Community have tried to provide for them, as in the Hermitage, which was completely made over through the work of many hands, into a private retreat house.
Crieff Hills Community still has room to grow in facilities and programs to continue serving the church and society as a retreat and conference center.

 Crieff & Strathearn Valley - History
In the early 18th century Crieff, on the Highland boundary, was mutually chosen as the safe meeting place [Tryst] for the sale and purchase of Highland cattle and ponies.
Much of the trade was done by means of bills and during the second quarter of the 18th century, Crieff came to be regarded as one of the main financial centres of Scotland.
Crieff has a number of well stocked shops and attractions with the oldest distillery in Scotland being one such attraction alongside the Visitor Centre and its new antiques area.

One other suggested derivation is Crioch - the settlement on the frontier: frontier certainly conveys the right image of the rugged Highland line which fringed the territory of the Celtic Earls of Strathearn who held their ancient lands and title by the indulgence of God.

This railway ran from Gleneagles (near Aucherarder) to Crieff.
To the west the line continued as the Crieff and Comrie Railway and to the east the line split, one part going to Perth and the other to Gleneagles.
