Crime Theories   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Most policy-making in criminal justice is based on criminological theory, whether the people making those policies know it or not.
At one time, criminological theory was rather pure and abstract, with few practical implications, but that is not the case anymore.
Criminological theories are primarily concerned with etiology (the study of causes or reasons for crime), but occasionally have important things to say about actors in the criminal justice system, such as police, attorneys, correctional personnel, and victims.

Introduction: The Bearing of Sociological Theory on Criminological Research (by Mathieu Deflem)
Not only was criminological thinking until the late 19th century not distinctly sociological, even when the earliest generation of criminologists focused on the social (rather than the biological or mental) correlates of crime, their analyses were not particularly informed by the theoretical insights from the burgeoning discipline of sociology.
Importantly, the endeavors in criminological sociology in the immediate post-war era not only took up a central place within the discipline as a whole, but that many theoretical ideas in our subfield were also central to sociological theorizing as such.
And serious criminological sociologists, like the representatives of any another disciplinary subfield, realize that core epistemological and theoretical issues are at stake in how their specialty enterprise and sociology as a whole are constituted.

 Status of Criminological Theory
Like other volumes in the series, this edited collection is intended to provide the reader with a "state of the art" understanding of significant theoretical and empirical issues.
Consistent with biases in the discipline, the perspective of the volume is very much offender-centered and the problems of criminology are very much understood as the problem of criminality.
Rather than read these biases and omissions as limitations of the current volume, it would be more helpful to think about them as signaling a need to "take stock" across the wider range of criminological problem areas and to do so in regular and frequent fashion.
