Textile Research Journal: Mechanism of Crimp Removal in Synthetic Staple Fibers: Part I: Crimp Geometry and the ...
When a crimped fiber is clamped in a tensile tester and continuously subjected to increasing strain, the stress-strain curve of the fiber during crimp removal can be calculated from the load-extension response, as shown in Figure 1.
Despite some overlapping rotational movement during crimp removal caused by irregular clamping, the videos conclusively show that crimp removal is primarily caused by an opening of the crimp angle, and they demonstrate that the crimp legs of a fiber appear to be rigid during crimp removal.
The difficulty of using a single characteristic load-extension point as the criterion for crimp behavior, as suggested by Textechno with the crimp removal point, is the high variability of the elongation values among fibers of the same type.

 Crimping Facts
The MS3191-1 design was a compromise between simplicity of operation and crimp performance since the crimp depth for any given contact was not adjustable to accommodate the differing diameters of the conductors to which it would be crimped.
It was, however, suitable for the crimp connectors of that era.
Crimping is a method of firmly attaching a terminal or contact end to an electrical conductor by pressure forming or reshaping a metal barrel, together with the conductor.

Connector Specifier - Don't judge a crimp by its cover
The crimp connectors were encapsulated in an epoxy resin to reveal the plane of cross sectioning through the crimp connector (left) and to enable the resulting cross-sectional view of the top section (right).
The curvature of the crimped connector is indicative of a greater crimping efficacy, as demonstrated by the degree of deformation of both the connector and the conductor strands within.
Poor crimping in the failed connectors led to a decrease in contact area between the connector and the wire conductors, which in turn was accompanied by an increase in the associated contact resistance.

When the ram is raised with a round in the shell holder, the round contacts the crimp ring and drives the free sliding guts of the die upward until the ball bearing contacts the bottom of the lever.
When the bottom of the crimp ring contacts the internal lip of the die body, the round will be pulled loose from the crimp ring and this will be felt as a slight tug as the ram is lowered.
This slight tug diminishes as the inside surface of the crimp ring is slowly polished by the minute particles of grit on the outside of the cases.
