Crimp (joining) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crimping is joining two pieces of metal or other malleable material by deforming one or both of them to hold the other.
Crimping is commonly used to join bullets to their cartridge cases, and for rapid but lasting electrical connectors.
Outside of metalworking, crimping is notably used for joining the edges of food products such as jiaozi and sealed crustless sandwiches.

Detsch Heavy Duty Common Contact System
Crimping may be defined as the art of joining a conductor to a pin or socket contact by controlled compression and displacement of metal.
Connectors utilizing crimped contacts usually permit the removal of these contacts several times so that modification, circuit changes or replacement of contacts may be made with the little difficulty and with the same quality assurance as in production line assembly.
Crimping tools are, in some cases, more expensive than soldering tools, bit this is more than off-set by the lower total installation and maintenance costs resulting from the simplicity and rapidity of the crimping operation.

 Basic crimping techniques
Crimping or swaging as it sometimes called is a quick and reliable method for making joins in monofilament and cable.
The purpose of crimping is to deform the metal of the sleeve around the leader and not to simply crush the crimp until it touches the leader in as many places as possible.
Many people think that a cup to cup crimping tool should be used with the metal ridges between the semi circular cups pressing into the central groove between the two barrels of a double barrel sleeve or into the flat surfaces of oval sleeves.

 crimps and their uses
Crimp terminals are sometimes used in DIY often to join two pieces of electrical cable together.
Crimp butt connectors are especially useful for joining cables in automotive applications, such as when a new stereo is fitted.
Each different colour represents a different size of crimp terminal and also corresponds to the correct thickness of wire, so if for example you were crimping a terminal to the end of some 6mm wire you would use a yellow crimp terminal.

The connector group is only partially inserted into the connector block 11 in order to expose the insulating crimp tabs 7 and the conductor crimp tabs 9 of each constituent connector so that they respectively may receive the outer insulation jacket 106 and the conductor 3 of a preformed parallel array of insulated conductors.
The joining strips 102, 104 may then be severed so as to render the individual conductors and their associated connector members electrically and structurally independent of each other, and the connector, and each cable connected thereto, may be thrust into the final retained position within its associated connector block, as shown in FIG.
The insulation crimp blade 39, the upper wire crimp blade 40, and the punch center shear 49, have all moved upward clear of the associated cable connectors, so that the cables and connectors associated therewith are held only by the grippers 16, 18 and the partial insertion of the connectors into the connector block.

AeroElectric Connection - Sport Aviation article by Peter Burgher Burgher
Over the years, elements of this description for "proper" joining of wires have found their way into other disciplines and planted erroneous notions about the properties of copper and solder.
Once the ideal crimp is achieved, nothing you can add in the way of solder is going to improve upon the joint either mechanically or electrically.
The area immediately adjacent to BOTH soldered and crimped joints is for all practical purposes, a solid wire.

Vanguard CRIMPSERT metallic insert fittings and fl, copper crimp rings are to be used as connections for Vanex PEX tubing in 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", and 1" sizes.
The connections are assembled with a full-circle crimp tool designed specifically for that purpose and are the same tools that were previously used to assemble insert and crimp ring fittings with polybutylene.
A permanent, sealed connection is made when a copper crimp ring is compressed around the tubing, pressing the PEX into spaces between the ribs of the fitting insert.

What is important to consider is that it's fairly common to have a BAD soldered connection due to contamination, over/underheating, or lack of flux.

How to put a crimp join in fishing line
A correctly made crimped join is by far the most reliable method for permanently joining heavy lines together.
The join in the fishing line should be double crimped on each side of the join as shown in the diagram.
While Paul's Fishing Kites report they have never had one of their crimped joins break, they have often repaired other manufacturers kitefishing equipment where crimped join failure has occurred with the resulting expensive loss of kites and gear.

As a general rule of thumb a 100kg mainline is ideal for fishing up to 25 traces on the west coast while those using 65kg mainlines should limit themselves to no more than 15 hooks per set when fishing the west coast.
Another useful option for those with 65 to 80kg mainlines is to correctly crimp a 100 to 120kg hook section into the mainline, nothing is stronger than a crimped join.
If no knots are used in constructing or repairing the mainline the breaking strain of the rig will be at least 40% greater than rigs with knots.
