I wasted a whole afternoon (without a scope) around the lodge clearing almost breaking my neck and hoping that those little fl spots (most of them doubtless flowerpeckers and sunbirds) on the treetops would move a little lower, but alas they stayed in the tree crowns.
I visited these islands on an afternoon with extremely limited time at hands, and therefore missed many of the target species that are usually seen by birders (such as Mangrove Blue Flycatcher and Blue-naped Parrot).

The old, appearance based classification had the Scarlet Honeyeater and the Crimson Sunbird most closely related - but look, now they're on different branches of the tree.
And the bird that shares an end twig with the Scarlet Honeyeater is the Large-billed Scrubwren.

I had last seen this incredible creature along the banks of the Servalar river and again in the Kannikatti highlands of the Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in March 1985.
I found a nest of the Crimson-backed Sunbird just off the road with a female in attendance.

Our first new birds of the day were Crimson Sunbird and Pale-billed Flowerpecker.
As we walked to the river we saw Crimson-backed Sunbird, the most common sunbird in the forest, Chestnut-headed Bee-eaters and Ashy Drongo.
We found three species of sunbird, Purple-rumped, Crimson and a splendid male Purple, the latter particularly pleasing as we'd only seen a female at the camp a couple of days ago.
