While the sub attack scenes in Crimson Tide strike me in somewhat the same vein, I believe they're much more defensible if simply because a) they make sense within the context of the story; and b) they prove to be essential in the advancement of the plot.
Crimson Tide appears in an aspect ratio of approximately 2.35:1 on this single-sided, single-layered DVD; the image has not been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.
The movie consistently displayed a solid sense of environment, and the sub attack sequences brought the rears into the picture to a positive degree; they made the viewer a part of the action.

From the first CNN scenes in CRIMSON TIDE of Russia fighting a civil war in one of their breakaway republics and then Russian nationalists taking over part of the military, I realized how close this was to the real news reports from over there that we are all naively been ignoring.
Here this movie is about to explode it is so hot and this intensity stays from the very start until, but not including the epilogue.
CRIMSON TIDE runs 1:53, and there is not a wasted minute in it.

Factual error: Approximately 35 to 40 minutes into the movie, when Denzel is talking to the crew about upgrading to DEFCON 3, they say the last time was 32 1/2 years ago during the Cuban missile crisis of October 1962.
Deliberate "mistake": During the part of the movie where the USS Alabama is sinking deeper into the ocean a shot of the depth gauge was made showing the sub passing 1800 feet at a quick rate.
Other: Near the start of the movie, when Hackman initiates the Missile Drill, one of the seaman can be seen to be throwing a blanket over the fish tank by his bunk.

I love the movie for an entertaining value, but the reality was terrible.
In the scene when the order goes out to open the torpedo doors for tubes 2 and 4 (which are on the Port or Left side) they actually show the doors for tubes 1 and 3 open (which are on the starboard or right side).
This is bogus, because flooding means that seawater is entering the room, and there are no seawater pipes, or areas connected to the hull, in which sea water could enter the room.

This movie kept my interest throughout and the conflict of personalities is superbly and masterfully enacted by the stars and supporting cast.
Overall, however, this is an excellent movie, particularly for those who like military action/drama films.
