Crimson-fronted Barbet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crimson-fronted Barbet (Megalaima rubricapilla), or Small Barbet, is a barbet which is a resident breeder in south west India and Sri Lanka.
Barbets are near passerine birds with a world-wide tropical distribution.
The adult Crimson-fronted Barbet has a mainly green body and wing plumage, a blue band down the side of the head and neck, and a fl crescent behind the eye.

 Megalaimidae (Asian Barbets)
Barbets are small, stocky-bodied birds with rather large heads which gives the appearance of a stubby neck.
African barbets are mainly yellow, fl or red and are heavily spotted or streaked.
Because the bill of the barbet is not as ‘chisel-like’ as a woodpecker they often dig their nesting holes into softer wood or plant materials; an African species digs into a dirt bank.

The Asian barbets are chunky, mostly small to mid-sized, often colorful and vocal birds of the Oriental tropics.
The call of the Coppersmith Barbet (left; at a nest hole); for example, is a dominant sound of Asian woodlands from India to Indonesia.
In some tracts of woods the hammering sound of these barbets is present dawn to dusk.

 Hin Kottoruwa (Endemic)
Out of the breeding season it is very gregarious, forming large, scattered flocks especially in the neighbourhood of fruiting trees, such as banyan, bo, and other wild figs; like all barbets it is predominantly a fruit eater.
After gorging themselves, they repair to the top branches and indulge in their hobby of vocal music, making the air pulsate with the chorus of pop op oping-to the distraction of their human audience.
The nest-hole is indistinguishable from that of the Crimsone-breasted Barbet, but is more often, I think, dug into the lower surface of a sloping branch rather than into an upright post, and is usually higher in a tree than with that species.

George was feeling a little under the weather so decided to stay at the hotel while the rest of us headed back to the area that we had heard the pitta yesterday.
Out in the front garden we had a nice Asian Paradise-flycatcher, several Red-rumped Swallows of the Sri Lankan race with their brick red underparts flying around the lawn and watched a White-rumped Munia bringing nesting material into the flower boxes on the balcony above.
On the way a Sambar walked across the road in front of us, but it was a pretty uneventful drive in the darkness - apart from the bus struggling to make the tight bends.
