A Special Gleaner Feature on Pieces of the Past - The Collapse of Tom Cringle's Cotton Tree-The first 500 years in ...
Tom Cringle's Log, the popular 1830s seafaring adventure tale for which Scott was to be remembered and from which the tree was named, was replete with melodramatic stories of piracy, smuggling, slavery and war.
In Tom Cringle's Log, Scott revealed the impact the tree's size made on his senses, noting the tree's shadow as being at least 100 ft in diameter and its trunk to be 20 ft. through, of solid timber.
The Cringle tree was also mentioned in Lady Nugent's Journal of her stay in Jamaica from 1801-1805 while her husband was governor.

 Weather and Reefing
If you are in a high wind situation and need to secure the reefing cringle to a reefing hock or horn, placing a long piece of hard foam in the cringle will help hold it on the hook or horn while you are tightening the mainsail's halyard.
The cringle can be secured by using a rope or if present, by placing over a hook (see picture to the right).
In high winds, the placement of the cringle on a hook can be difficult, since after it is placed one must then let go of the cringle (grommet) to pull and tighten the main's halyard.

The reefing cringles, to which you refer are seldom, if ever, used on a high-incidence Bermudan main.
If you have ramshorn(s) for securing the tack cringle(s) then you may find it advantageous to use a couple of suitably sized s/s rings fastened together with a very short loop of sewed-together webbing which passes through each tack cringle.
If using this method the webbing loop needs to be as short as possible so that the tack cringle is held very close to the gooseneck to make sure that the strain along the foot of the sail is taken on the cringle and not the first sail slide.

Yachting and Boating World: Reefing downhaul
This means the sail kind of "bunches" at the downhaul point, putting an awful lot of tension on that point of the sail (from the downhaul cringle radiating out and along to each of the slugs), which I imagine is most undesirable and could result in tearing the sail.
On my sail the slides are well either side of the reef cringles, so I can easily pull the cringle down onto the reefing hook without removing any slides.
That should be able to pull the cringle right down to the boom past the stacked sliders.

Long before it became so fashionable Burnham was an important centre for the farming community, although nowadays much of its income is derived from the tourism industry and many smart shops and eating places fill the village.
About a mile away on the coast is the old harbour of Burnham Overy Staithe, which is now a popular pleasure sailing centre, but in the 17thC and 18thC it was an important destination for ships sailing up and down the North Sea.
It was here that the Cringle family arrived in Norfolk from the Isle of Man; Captain William Cringle was skipper of one such ship carrying grain and other goods on these sea-routes round the British Isles, and for whatever reason decided to settle in Norfolk in the mid18thC.
