A Lake District Walk - Crinkle Crags and Bowfell from Great Langdale
The Crinkle Crags had always fascinated me simply because of their cranky name and so on my umpteenth trip to the Lake District I decided I would finally explore them.
Crinkle Crags are so called because of their profile, a succession of abrupt undulations on a high long ridge.

 LUOAC - Langdale
Above the end of the valley are the Crinkle Crags - five rocky peaks together on a long ridge from Bow Fell.
From the summit of the crags, the views on a clear day can be excellent in all directions - the Scafell range to the west, and to the east, the whole Langdale valley and out to the Eastern Fells.
The Crinkle Crags walk is often extended to include other high peaks, such as Pike o'Blisco on the south and Bow Fell and Esk Pike on the north.

 Crinkle Crags
The summit of Crinkle Crags was busy, why I expected anything else on a day like today is beyond me. Judging by the accents it was plain to see that the majority of people were from the more southerly counties of England.
The fifth crinkle involved a bit of a scramble and then on towards Shelter Crags was very rough, many boulders to cross and no path.
So that was Crinkle Crags, only half the walk I had planned but one of the most enjoyable ones.

The Lake District - Crinkle Crags
The traverse of Crinkle Crags is one of the most famous ridge-walks in the land; in fact, Wainwright said it was the best in Lakeland.
I climbed the Crinkles from Bowfell in May 2005, tackling the ridge from the north as an add-on from the main objective of the day.
And although some people will say that the Crinkles are too "dangerous" to walk without watching where you're putting your feet, there are several stretches where the terrain is easy and it's quite possible to stride along and look at the view at the same time.

On the second morning, I was effectively frozen in my tent, as the water from the previous day made the zip seize up and the fabric of the tent take on properties more akin to those of tinfoil than canvas.
After a good evening in the Old Dungeon Ghyll’s Hiker’s Bar, and a wet night in the tent, I set off for Crinkle Crags, via Pike of Blisco.
[…] While descending from the Pikes, I was lucky enough to see the sun set behind the Crinkle Crags I’d traversed the day before, which slightly eased the pain of dismantling my still frozen iced-up tent in the dark.

Although we would have liked to, we did not visit it, as it was a hot day and we knew the walk over Crinkle Crags was going to be rough, and therefore hard work, without adding extra, so we decided to leave Great Knotts for another day.
From the first Crinkle, we started making our way over the rocky ground to the second Crinkle, Long Top, which is also the highest, and therefore the true summit of Crinkle Crags.
By the time I reached the Third Crinkle, David was on the Fourth Crinkle, so I took a picture of the summit cairn instead.

The next problem was that to carry on to Bowfell from the top of the Crinkles I noticed that the map showed a slight deviation to the North North West.
So when we ended up on this rough course I was reasonably happy, and we appeared to be on a track, although at times very bouldery and steep descending.
We had descended much too far to the West and were about 100 metres vertically and 500 metres horizontally from Three Tarns, where I had hoped to come off the Crinkles (this is the point roughly where I took the photo abpve).
