Crinoline - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crinoline was originally a stiff fabric with a weft of horse-hair and a warp of cotton or linen thread.
The crinoline was not the first accessory designed to support the wearer's skirts in the correct shape; the farthingale was worn in the seventeenth century and panniers in the eighteenth century.
The first 'crinolines' were petticoats starched for extra stiffness, or made out of the new crinoline fabric, and they often had ruffles to support the skirts to the desired width.

The crinoline still survived under a new name "crinolinette" or half-crinoline to be definitively, but slowly, supplanted by the puff and the bustle (or « faux-cul » in french) from 1868.
Another plus of the crinoline was that the corset did not have to be laced as tightly since the hoop was so wide, the waist appeared to be smaller than it measured.
In 1856 there was a patent of a crinoline that was inflated by means of a bellows and in order for the woman to sit down, she had to deflate it, and reinflate it with the bellows when she stood up.

The Crinoline was supposed to make the WIDE skirts that were fashionable at that time a little bit more comfortable and to reach new width's and sizes.
Crinolines made the formidable skirts of fashionable women bigger than the petticoats could have made them, and they also decreased the waist line.
Each crinoline used up 60 yards of wire, with 9,597,600 crinolines produced, this is well enough wire to circle the globe, at the equator, 13 times.

The Crinoline Period (1850-1869) is named after the major fashion innovation of the era, the cage crinoline http://trulyvictorian.netfirms.com/103.jpg.
The cage crinoline, which was a series of concentric whalebone or steel hoops sewn onto tapes that supported the fabric of the dress, was very popular with women because it was lightweight, unlike clothing in the Romantic era.
Although undated, this is an example of late Crinoline Period because of the excessive width of the skirts.

Victorian Era - clothing, attire, garments, dresses, corsets, jewelry, accessories & more!
The crinoline, with it’s excessively large skirt, now made the waist appear comparatively small and as a result, corsets could be loosened if the lady’s vanity would allow it.
As for the crinoline, it was a band or braid of horsehair, crin being the French word or horsehair.
The reality was that, although the “new” crinoline did free the lady’s legs of the bogging layers of “frou-frou” petticoats, it was often dangerous.

This type of crinoline is not to be confused with the 1850s version made of steel hoops, which will be discussed later.
It is therefore not difficult to see where the archetypal image of the meek, servile Victorian woman comes from, with drooping waist and low stooped shoulders, staying at home, encased in her restrictive underwear and layers of heavy petticoats.
There were also many tales of accidents that could befall hapless wearers of crinolines, such as being caught in her hoops as she descended from a carriage or of causing havoc if she were a factory girl or servant as china, glass and other delicate materials could easily be swept off shelves and tables.

Thus, a woman's petticoated or crinolined skirt would lose its shape during everyday wear (from merely sitting down or moving about).
Crinolines had a short asymmetric period before they were abandoned in favor of the bustle.
The bustle was worn in different shapes for most of the 1870s and 1880s with a short period of non-bustled, flat-backed dresses from 1878 to 1882.
