Topic: Crisis (comic)

  Crisis on Infinite Earths
Crisis on Infinite Earths was a 12 issue comic book mini-series produced by DC Comics in 1985 in order to clean up their 50 year old convoluted and confusing continuity.
The series, known simply as Crisis to comic book fans, was one of three major comic book stories published by DC in the same year that had a profound effect on the comic book industry as a whole.
With that, a single DC Comics universe was created and all the superheroes found themselves in one reality where the various elements of the five Earths were fused into one.

Crisis was a British comic published from 1988 to 1991 as an experiment by Fleetway to see if intelligent, mature, politically and socially aware comics were saleable in the United Kingdom.
The comic was initially published fortnightly, and was one of the most visible components of the late-80s British comics boom, along with Deadline, Revolver, and Toxic!

Years of accumulated history were beginning to slow down DC's mightiest champions, and the "parallel worlds" theory that allowed superheroes from the 1940s and the 1980s to co-exist was starting to interfere with the ideas of a new generation of comic writers, who wanted the freedom to re-interpret their childhood heroes.
Not only was it the starting point for the re-introduction of every major DC character, it also marked the beginning of a universe in which major heroes died and stayed dead, millions of lives could be snuffed out on a whim, and a hero's life could be dramatically changed without warning.
The slate was wiped clean by the actions in Crisis, and a new generation of DC writers and artists were eager to make their own mark upon it.

Crisis helped redefine and re-shape the DC Universe, and served as springboard for the re-launching of all the core DC titles.
There are, however, vast sections of the comic that are not recounted here because this version of the story has a very focused plot as opposed to the rambling, branching nature of the comic.
The Crisis comic had some good characterization, but because of the vast nature of the story, it was doled about a panel here and a panel there.

Infinite Crisis #1 - PopMatters Comic Book Review
So, comic book publishers have had to walk the delicate balance of paying back loyal fans for their years of devotion by giving a nod to history while not alienating new readers with too much of a focus on years of continuity.
Crisis on Infinite Earths was the 1985 maxi-series written by Marv Wolfman and drawn by George Pérez created to try to streamline and simplify 50 years of continuity by drastically cutting down the cast of the DC Universe and starting many characters almost from scratch.
And since Infinite Crisis is rumored to be a series that will have a lasting effect on the entire DC Universe in the years to come, the series will be picked up by a number of new readers just to see what changes will be made.

For over a year now, before the readership even knew what was going on, DC Comics has been building up to this storyline, which promises to restructure the entire universe, and seeing how much has already changed, this is for once a claim that isn’t difficult to believe.
It’s also obvious, by the conclusion, that this is a sequel to the original Crisis on Infinite Earths, not just a thematic sequel, and that the events of that long-ago tale are very, very important to the future of the DCU.
This is a fantastic comic, and while being a longtime DC fan has certainly helped my appreciation of it, I think anyone with a passing interest in the characters will get pulled right in and camp out for the next issue.

Originally released as a seven-issue mini-series last year, Identity Crisis weaves together a tale of rape, violence, murder, lies, and deceit in with fantastic ideas, such as "mindwipes" and the very concept of the "superhero", into a taut, engaging, and affective tale that answers two fundamental questions of superheroes specifically and comic books generally.
With those two events, Identity Crisis brings an honest-to-God danger back into the ranks of the jokey villains of DC's Silver Age, while brining to the fore the notion of identity itself, both of the secret variety as well as what the identity is of this league of supposed heroes.

But the 'real' crisis is about the characters, what it means to be fallible and human, to rise above or sink low, to be a hero, or a villain, in the DCU.

It was Crisis on Infinite Earths that eliminated the need for multiple earths and multiple versions of the same superhero, allowing continuity to run smoothly and making DC Comics easier to follow.
The lasting impact of "Crisis" is that its effects on continuity are still being felt today, something that DC hopes to repeat with Infinite Crisis, so it's appropriate they paid homage to the original in the title.
