Crispin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crispin and Crispinian were once the Catholic patron saints of cobblers, tanners, and leather workers.
Indeed, their role as shoemakers, their relationship as twins, and the timing of their holiday are suggestive of the possibility that they could have represented a local Celtic deity which had been made into a saint during a syncretist conversion.
Crispin is perhaps best known for lending his name to the famous speech given by the eponymous king in Shakespeare's Henry V before the Battle of Agincourt, where Crispinian's name is spelled Crispian, perhaps reflecting London pronunciation of the time:

Edmund Crispin (1921-1978) wrote very few books -- his main output, important as it is, was produced in just the few years between 1945 and 1951 -- but was an important mystery critic in England, in some opinions maybe the best after Julian Symons.
Crispin had a nasty habit of throwing in allusions and quotations (often in Latin, French, or German) that even a well-educated person such as I consider myself to be has no clue about.
Amusing that Crispin, talking about Fen's fondness for 'outdated American slang', should think 'cover up' falls in that category -- this (not meaning 'place a cloth over') is now part of the English language wherever it's spoken.

That coincidence in turn inspired William Shakespeare, almost two centuries later, to pen the awesome speech that King Henry V should have given to his troops before the conflict:
Crispin, martyred in 287, under the reign of Diocletian.
