The Films of Robert Siodmak - by Michael Grost
Criss Cross has numerous scenes shot on staircases, and sloping locations that are staircase like.
Criss Cross includes a shot where another guard talks to Lancaster, through a window into the van of the truck.
Criss Cross ends at a beach house on the ocean, where the heroine reveals her mercenary nature and abandons the hero, just before the violent ending.

Criss Cross was, indeed, a Hellinger property, smartly retrieved by the studio from his estate and handed confidently to The Killers's director, Robert Siodmak, and its star, Lancaster.
Criss Cross is a title predicated on the fatality of positioning; it is also a movie that truly employs its company logo—that L.A. night takes off from the Universal-International Earth in its velvet darkness.
Criss Cross merits a respectable place in noir, yet it has dazzling, fresh-air, sunswiped scenes, too; and its darkest luster attends less to violence than the faltering in the love story.

From The Movie Guide: "A bleak but compelling film noir, CRISS CROSS stars the forceful Burt Lancaster as an honest armored-car guard who takes up again with his ex-wife, De Carlo, now married to sleazy gangster Duryea.
"CRISS CROSS is a somber, extremely violent, utterly grim film, with suspense expertly maintained throughout by Robert Siodmak's taut direction --- his handling of flashbacks and clever staging of the robbery stand out.
Lancaster is powerful as the love-torn guard, and Yvonne De Carlo smokes up the screen with her earthy portrayal of a money-hungry vamp (a role almost twin to Ava Gardner's slippery siren opposite Lancaster in THE KILLERS).

Criss Cross (1949 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Criss Cross is a 1949 film noir movie, directed by Robert Siodmak from a novel written by Don Tracy.
To deflect suspicion of the affair, Lancaster leads Duryea into a daylight armored-truck robbery, only to be "criss crossed" when the crime is pulled off.
Also appearing in the movie are supporting actors Percy Helton (playing a bartender) and Stephen McNally (as the cop friend of Steve's).

Steve, planning to double cross Slim by running away with Anna and the payroll, reluctantly carries out the plan when the gangster agrees.
Criss Cross fascinates because it portrays a man who double crosses himself.

Featuring the brief screen debut of Tony Curtis, Criss Cross is a stylish masterpiece of clashing fates and fatal attractions; Franz Planer's cinematography creates a shadow world in which every desire is tainted by the threat of violence, and Miklos Rozsa's score underlines a love story that could never end happily.
Also appearing is Dan Duryea (Ministry of Fear) in one of his more typical roles as a villainous hoodlum, although I did recently see him in the film Black Angel, showing that he could also play the protagonist equally as well (the character may have been intrinsically weak, but the characterization wasn't).
The Robert Siodmak directed "Criss Cross", has all the classic underpinnings for film noir, fl and white cinematography, a plot bordering on criminality and a manipulative bad girl.

 L. A. Nocturne's Los Angeles Film Noir
More film than noir, this movie is mostly memorable for its late 50s Little Tokyo film locations than for the storyline, the angst of the two detectives who fall in love with their key witness in this murder mystery.
Whether this is the fault of the director or the editor, the movie proceeds at a stately pace, with stock neo-noir camera angles and lighting.
At movie's end, my foremost urge is to go directly to the shelf, turn to page 1, and start reading, to get that gritty taste back in my mouth.

In the former, the danger is Anna, and in the latter the danger is a stalking murderer, but in both cases the domineering presence of the maternal figures is ignored to satisfy either bodily (Steve's passion for his ex-wife) or intellectual (Helen's curiosity to investigate the murderer) desires.
In Criss Cross, the haunting scenes of the heist perpetrators walking in gas masks through clouds of tear gas remind viewers of battlefield scenes directly pulled from World War II newsreels.
For example, in Criss Cross, the scenes of Steve walking to his parent's neighbourhood home are illuminated by natural sunlight, suggesting that clarity for Steve can be found in domestic stability, as opposed to the dim lighting in the local bar.

Although audiences gasped in shock at the first sight of America's chirping child diva, heavily made up and in décolleté in a sleazy club, Christmas Holiday was a money-spinner and Durbin has repeatedly cited it as her only worthwhile film.
The later Siodmak movies on view, The Suspect (1944), The Killers (1946), and Criss Cross (1949) are near-classics.
Criss Cross, arguably the best film of Siodmak's career, is both a superbly crafted caper movie and a disturbing account of amour fou depicted with Germanic fatalism.

In the end, ''Los Angeles Plays Itself" works best as a reclamation project, both for long-forgotten movies like 1961's ''The Exiles" and for long-destroyed neighborhoods such as the working-class Bunker Hill, where ''Exiles" was filmed.
Other tight-lipped classics of SoCal fatalism playing at the Brattle include ''Criss Cross" (1949) and ''This Gun for Hire" (1942, starring Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake).
The Brattle is also showing John Boorman's tremendous, surreal ''Point Blank" (1967), starring Lee Marvin as a stone-faced avenging angel striding through the corridors of late-'60s LA snuffing out the criminals who tried to do him in.

City Pages - Movies - Criss Cross
As an impossibly convoluted thriller stuffed with flashbacks and nihilistic voiceovers, this 1949 film noir from director Robert Siodmak isn't quite on a par with The Killers, Siodmak's first collaboration with tough guy-cum-patsy Burt Lancaster.
In fact, what seemed to be Soderbergh's most innovative scene--a protracted hospital-room dialogue between the helpless protagonist and his potential assassin--actually pales by comparison to Siodmak's more straightforwardly intense staging, in which the intersecting bars of the hero's death bed represent both title and plot in visual terms.
