Christopher Columbus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Besides the fact that there were many instances of Pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact, and it is questionable whether one person can "discover" a place which is inhabited by other people, Columbus is often credited as having discovered America.
He was most likely Genoese, although some historians claim he could have been born in other places, from the Crown of Aragón to the Kingdoms of Galicia or Portugal, or in the Greek island of Chios among others.
Columbus left from Cádiz, Spain for his second voyage (1493-1496) on September 24, 1493, with 17 ships carrying supplies and about 1200 men to assist in the subjugation of the Taíno and the colonization of the region.

Cristobal Colon, de Ibiza y criptojudío - "El Colongate"
In actual fact, my extensive research has served to confirm a well-founded suspicion that Cristobal Colom was Catalan by birth, a key discovery in the eyes of my friends and fellow researchers all of whom are members of the Centre d’Estudis Colombins d’Omnium Cultural (Centre of Columbian Studies) in Barcelona.
There are other studies under way and I hope one day to finish the crossword puzzle or complete mosaic as it was expressed by Simon Wiesenthal, the famous hunter of nazis and Columbian researcher in his Vienna office.
In any case, while we are presented with so many utopic C.Colombos, Colons and Colonnes, it is the explorer Christòbal Colom, of Catalan origin and from Ibiza, who wins the battle by elimination.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Christopher Columbus
The vessels of Columbus having suffered comparatively little from the tempest, he left the coast of Haiti in July, 1502, and was carried by wind and current to the coast of Honduras.
On his frequent landings he found traces of gold, heard reports of more civilized tribes of natives farther inland, and persistent statements about another ocean lying west and south of the land he was coasting, the latter being represented to him as a narrow strip dividing two vast seas.

One of the works of Romero Lema is La lengua de Cristobal Colon (the language of Cristobal Colon), and in it he tries to demostrate his assertion, on the basis of Colon's vocabulary.
Furthermore, there is a book entitled La identidad de Cristobal Colon (The identity of Cristobal Colon), by Alfonso Philippot Abeledo, where it is claimed that Colon was of Galician origin, with birthplace at the village of Poio.
In the first chapters, the author denies with careful and extensive arguments the italian (Genovese) origin of Colon, and then analyzes the names given by Colon to places in America, of which the vast majority are similar to galician villages.
