 Bristol University - Department of English - Shakespearean Tragedy: Textual and Literary Criticism
The course will focus on the main four tragedies - Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth; on the interpretative challenges which these plays pose; and on the differing ways in which differing critical approaches address those challenges.
The last mentioned might include Tate’s version of Lear, Turgenev’s responses to the same play, Edward Bond’s Lear and Jane Smiley’s A Thousand Acres; Romantic and Victorian Poets’ versions of Hamlet, Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations, Henry James’s ‘Master Eustace’, D.H. Lawrence’s Twilight in Italy, Davenant’s Macbeth.
Otherwise inferior modernised versions of Quarto and Folio Lears are available in the Complete Norton and Complete Oxford Shakespeares.
