  Illuminations: Kellner
Critical theory from the 1930s through the 1960s was arguably on the cutting edge of social theory.[1] The critical theorists were among the first to analyze the new configurations of state and economy in the social formations of state capitalism.
Critical theory remains of intense interest for the present conjuncture and provides crucial resources for a renewal of critical social theory and democratic politics in the current age precisely because, like the 1930s, our age is undergoing vast transformations, some of which are promising and some of which are threatening.
Their critical questioning of Marxism was induced in part by historical conditions such as the demise of the labor movement, the spread of fascism and war, and oppressive developments in the Soviet Union which made it difficult to envisage critical theory as part of a revolutionary movement, or to unproblematically call for socialist revolution.

20th WCP: Skills, Generalizability and Critical Thinking
Siegel characterizes the critical thinker as one who is appropriately moved by reasons and one of the main aspects of critical thinking for Siegel is the reason assessment component, i.e., the ability properly to assess reasons and their ability to warrant beliefs, claims and actions (Siegel 1988).
Critical thinking is not, then, a matter of applying critical thinking skills to various domains of knowledge, but rather of mastering certain kinds of knowledge in the domain or domains.
A focus on critical practices as embodied in traditions of inquiry, however, brings to the fore this network of concepts, principles, procedures and purposes and makes clear the point of the practices and the place of particular principles and criteria within them.

LLT Journal: NEW TECHNOLOGIES, NEW LITERACIES FOCUS DISCIPLINE RESEARCH AND ESL LEARNING COMMUNITIES
Focus discipline tasks were designed to provide ample opportunities for ESL students to use English to gather, synthesize, and evaluate a range of informational resources and to construct responses using appropriate discourse patterns.
For example, in a focus discipline project on eating disorders, a young woman from Poland, who had chosen diet and nutrition as her focus discipline, presented a detailed analysis of the causes and effects of anorexia and bulimia.
The critical reflection that accompanies transformed practice forces students to become aware of and to challenge their beliefs; this process may be not only challenging but also troubling to ESL learners.

Diversity: Making Sense of It Through Critical Thinking - The Critical Thinking Community   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
With critical thinking at the foundation of instruction, neither multiculturalism nor feminism are treated as exceptions to the evaluative force of critical thought.
The focus is on developing reasoning abilities in general, on teaching students how to evaluate any form of reasoning, whether their own or someone else's, whether it is articulated verbally or expressed in written form.
In short, through critical thinking we place all instruction, including its diversity components, on firm foundation so that improving students’ reasoning abilities, as well as their abilities to evaluate the reasoning of others, becomes the primary focus.

GAO-04-585T, Budget Process: Long-term Focus Is Critical
This is the accessible text file for GAO report number GAO-04-585T entitled 'Budget Process: Long-term Focus Is Critical' which was released on March 23, 2004.
From a macro perspective the critical question is not how much a trust fund has in assets, but whether the government as a whole has the economic capacity to finance the benefits promised by these programs both now and in the future and, if so, at what cost, and with what implications.
As a result, we need to incorporate new metrics and mechanisms into the budget process that better signal the long-term commitments and implicit promises made by the government--its fiscal exposures--so that decision makers' attention and efforts can be more concentrated on their long-term sustainability.

 CRITICAL THINKING
Unfortunately, for all the apparent focus on critical thinking, it is often either not well understood, or it is not presented in a way that encourages people to use it.
We also taught an elective session on critical thinking from 1993 to 1996 which focused on "teaching for thinking." As we continue to evolve the curriculum, we are starting to "infuse" critical thinking as we teach the content.

The change in focus to critical thinking needs to occur in a decentralized manner so that faculties are cognitively open to new paradigms and perspectives.
Since acquiring critical thinking habits and skills is generally believed to be learned over a long period of time, it would logically follow that critical thinking needs to be taught throughout the educational program.
