Topic: Critical Path Method

Critical path method - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Using these values, CPM calculates the starting and ending times for each activity, determines which activities are critical to the completion of a project (called the critical path), and reveals those activities with "float time" (are less critical).
In project management, a critical path is the sequence of project network activities with the longest overall duration, determining the shortest time possible to complete the project.
An additional parallel path through the network with the total durations shorter than the critical path is called a sub-critical or non-critical path.

Wideman Comparative Glossary of Project Management Terms v3.1
The critical path of a project may change from time to time as activities are completed ahead of or behind schedule.
If an activity on the critical path is delayed by one day, the entire project will be delayed by one day (unless another activity on the critical path can be accelerated by one day).
The method used to determine the length of a project and to identify the activities that are critical to the completion of the project.

 Critical Path Method (CPM)
CPM is for projects that are made up of a number of individual "activities." If some of the activities require other activities to finish before they can start, then the project becomes a complex web of activities.
The four paths are A D G J, A C F J, A E H I J, and B H I J. We'll code them in the spreadsheet with a matrix of 0's and 1's.
In this example, "Critical" appears in cell H15, because this first path is the critical path.

 PERT, CPM and GANTT
Critical Path Method (CPM) charts are similar to PERT charts and are sometimes known as PERT/CPM.
In a CPM chart, the critical path is indicated.
The critical path for any given method may shift as the project progresses; this can happen when tasks are completed either behind or ahead of schedule, causing other tasks which may still be onschedule to fall on the new critical path.

Process Thinking - Critical Path Method (aka PERT Charts)
The critical path method (CPM) was invented by project managers in the early 1950's.
Second, it is the origin of the term critical path.

 CPM - Critical Path Method
CPM is a deterministic model that does not take into account variation in the completion time, so only one number is used for an activity's time estimate.
The significance of the critical path is that the activities that lie on it cannot be delayed without delaying the project.
The critical path is the path through the project network in which none of the activities have slack, that is, the path for which ES=LS and EF=LF for all activities in the path.

The Critical Path Method: What It's All About
CPM is not just a data manipulation tool, but a logical approach to work.
Actually, you use CPM to determine the earliest (and latest) starting time, based on your expected duration for each activity and the precedence relationships you determine.
The critical path consists of those activities that determine how long it will take to complete the entire project.

 The Critical Path Method (CPM)
Tasks which are not on the critical path have more leeway, and may be slipped without affecting the end date of the project.
Tasks on the critical path have no slack and this feature may be used to actually identify the critical path.
It may be possible to reduce the critical path of a project (and consequently pull in the completion date) by rearranging some tasks which have an optional sequence or by moving key people onto tasks in the critical path so you can reduce the time for these tasks.

Mind Tools - Critical Path Analysis and PERT
Critical Path Analysis and PERT are powerful tools that help you to schedule and manage complex projects.
The benefit of using CPA over Gantt Charts is that Critical Path Analysis formally identifies tasks which must be completed on time for the whole project to be completed on time, and also identifies which tasks can be delayed for a while if resource needs to be reallocated to catch up on missed tasks.
Critical Path Analyses are presented using circle and arrow diagrams.

The Critical Path Method (or CPM) is the method by which the critical path through a project schedule is calculated.

Critical Path Analysis is an extremely effective method of analysing a complex project.

An effective critical path analysis can make the difference between success and failure on complex projects, and can be an effective tool for assessing the importance of problems faced during the implementation of the plan.

SNIEDOVICH -- TOWARDS AN AOA-FREE COURSEWARE FOR THE CRITICAL PATH METHOD
The point to observe is that as far as the CPM is concerned a table such as Table 1 completely describes a project and therefore no additional details are required for the method to be applied.
CPM courseware developers should also be encouraged to make explicit the dynamic programming content of their courseware.
The method commonly used to identify the critical path of a project is dynamic programming (Bellman, 1957).

Transparency in Critical Path Method Scheduling
The critical path method of scheduling is the fundamental tool used to develop and communicate project plans.
As outlined in the article Critics Can't Find the Logic in Many of Today's CPM Schedules (originally published by the Engineering News-Record, 5/26/2003), the predecessor diagramming method (PDM) of scheduling as implemented in most project management software does not offer full transparency of the critical path.

SNIEDOVICH -- TOWARDS AN AOA-FREE COURSEWARE FOR THE CRITICAL PATH METHOD
Since this notion is not an essential ingredient of the CPM itself, its inclusion as a central ingredient of AoA should be regarded as a serious weakness of the AoA framework itself, not merely its implementation.
The interesting thing is that the founders of the CPM were well aware of the fact that from a purely graph theoretic point of view the choice of the AoA paradigm was not natural.
For this reason it is important to note that in the context of the CPM the need for dummy activities arises not due to the basic AoA methodology, but rather due to the Traditional Modelling Rules imposed on the construction of AoA networks.

Critical Path Method (CPM), is a procedure for using network analysis to identify those tasks which are on the critical path: ie where any delay in the completion of these tasks will lengthen the project timescale, unless action is taken.
For all tasks off the critical path, a degree of tolerance is possible (eg late start, late completion, early start, etc.).
Network charts and CPM analysis used to be carried out by hand.

NETWORK ALGORITHM - Critical Path Method
It also has a starting node and works by computing 'flag values' for the nodes, however for CPM problems, the flag values represent the longest time to each node, and the nodes in the network may be processed in any sequence so long as all preceding nodes have flags at each step.
But the possibility of concurrent activities means that there will usually be many paths through the network, and the longest of these is called the critical path since it determines the minimal project duration.
This (or these) critical path(s) determine minimum project duration since all of them must be completed as part of the project, and all noncritical activities can be completed concurrently with the critical activities.

Critical Path Method (CPM) and Performance Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) are widely recognized as the most effective methods of keeping large, complex construction projects on schedule, under budget, and up to professional standards.
But these methods remain underused because they are poorly understood and, due to a host of unfamiliar terms and applications, may seem more complicated than they really are.
