  Roman Catholic Church at AllExperts
Reformers within the Catholic Church launched the Counter Reformation, a period of doctrinal clarification, reform of the clergy and the liturgy, and re-evangelization begun by the Council of Trent.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church, 85 states that authentic interpretation of the Word of God is entrusted to the living Magisterium of the Church, namely the bishops in communion with the successor of Saint Peter.
Recently, the Church is criticized for its opposition to scientific research in fields such as embryonic stem cell research, which the Church teaches would cause the utilitarian destruction of a human being, or simply put, an act of murder.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Biblical Criticism (Higher)
Catholic Biblical critics, while taking as postulates the plenary inspiration and the inerrancy of the sacred Writings, admit in a large measure the literary and historical conclusions reached by non-Catholic workers in this field, and maintain that these are not excluded by Catholic faith.
The critical dissection of books was and is accomplished on the ground of diversity of vocabulary and style, the phenomena of double narratives of the same event varying from each other, it is claimed, to the extent of discrepancy, and differences of religious conceptions.
The majority of contemporary critics incline to Harnack's view, which is that the Fourth Gospel was composed by John the Presbyter or the "elder" referred to in a fragment by Papias, and asserted by the Harnackians to be distinct from the Apostle and a disciple of the latter.

1994 Report on Anti-Catholicism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
Evidently, the Church's positions on the integrity of the family and the rights of the unborn is so distasteful to some that they can't restrain from making vitriolic attacks.
The Catholic League was particularly disturbed by the lame response of Governor Christie Todd Whitman of New Jersey to a serious incident of Catholic-bashing at a state college.
Sure, the hierarchal nature of the Catholic Church, coupled with its countercultural positions, makes for an easy target, but the fact remains that there are lots of easy targets in society, yet only a few seem to be fair game.

THE VATICAN AND THE STANDOFF AT THE CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY
The church is considered one of the most important shrines and holy places in Christianity, built over the grotto in which, according to tradition, Jesus was born, as it is written: "[Mary] placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn" (Luke 2:7).

The American Religious Right: about the true nature of the American Religious Right movement.
Journalists, cartoonists or politicians who dare to publicly criticize church policies (such as the Catholic hierarchy's pathological attitudes towards sex or its disapproval of birth control, to name only two), are relentlessly hounded, harrassed and publicly humiliated.
We demand that the Catholic Church be portrayed exclusively as a humanitarian organization, and no mention be made of the fact that the worldview promoted by the Vatican through humanitarian aid is centuries out of date and a danger to the survival of the human species.
That the Catholic League felt the need to mount a boycot campaign against Miramax's parent company, Disney, demonstrates that the League is really nothing but a continuation of the Holy Roman Inquisition, a mean, vindictive guardian of ideological purity that seeks to silence dissent with the tenets of ultra-conservative catholicism.

TaxProf Blog: Will Catholic Church's Criticism of Kerry Jeopardize Tax Exemption?
It is not just saying good Catholics oppose these issues, but is instead saying that when a Catholic balances the pros and cons of a candidate, he risks salvation if he decides to vote for Kerry over Bush.
Churches shouldn't endorce a canidate, it is in the state's interest that it does not, so the state offers it a privilage in exchange for non-interferance.
If churches were able to endorce canidates, it would lead to them creating political parties around their particular sect, and personally, I think if someone one the Baptist party nomination, that would most certainly NOT be someone I wanted running the country.

Catholics who tire of histories critical of their church will find much to love in Triumph, by the journalist and novelist H.W. Crocker III.
Theologically, however, Crocker is so eager to depict the church in a positive light that he's all but blind to its flaws.
For example, he acknowledges that tortures and executions occurred during the Inquisition and does not excuse them, but he also observes that they were miniscule compared to the bloody conflict that was to follow as a result of the Protestant Reformation.

But it has been criticised by the Catholic Church, which claimed the storyline is a fabrication.

Crocker will, predictably, be criticized by those who wish that the Church was not so wedded to the objective, immutable, hard truths preached by the Apostles and St. Paul.
But the history of the Catholic church is really just like the rest of the world- a history of politics and power- gaining power, extending it, and not letting any other religious groups have any access to it.

Catholic World News : Russian patriarch reaffirms demands on Vatican
Patriarch Alexei complained that Catholic missionaries should not be active in the "canonical territories" of the Orthodox Church, and that the activities of the Ukrainian Catholic Church must be curtailed.
He hates the Ukrainian Catholic Church, and the Vatican all too often is also unfair to them because it doesn`t want to offend Russia.
I believe I read somewhere in the Cathechism us Catholics feel, despite some obvious divisions, we are in union enough with the Orthodox to share communion with them, although they do not feel the same.

Christianity : Postmodern Church : My Struggle with Faith - A Review
Having lived and served within the Catholic Church for decades (Girzone first entered seminary as a middle teen) Girzone is an excellent witness to the strength, and sometimes weakness, of the message of the Catholic Church.
Some of the issues that Girzone takes exception to are: the demand that priests be celibate, the hard-line separation of the Catholic Church from other Christian expressions, and the refusal to discuss the merits of birth control-especially in the developing world.
While Luther certainly didn't mean for his constructive criticism of the Catholic Church to lead to the era of a thousand fractures, that certainly was the end result.

Melbourne priests prepare to fight church attackers
They cite as an example the continued criticism of the Catholic Church for sexual assaults by priests and Catholic laity, when the church, they say, has taken remedial action and when the problem is more widespread.
Fr Michael Shadbolt, parish priest of Holy Family, Doveton, and Fr Herman Hengel, parish priest of St Agatha's, Cranbourne, who have formed the Catholic Priests' Anti-Defamation League to combat the attacks, say Catholics are outraged by anti-Catholic scenes in the television show South Park aired recently on SBS.
They say scenes depicting Pope John Paul II dribbling incoherently and a priest fornicating in a confession box are part of a savage anti-Catholic campaign they call the new anti-Semitism.

Student's parrot jibe ruffles ministerial feathers - National - smh.com.au
During a grilling by students in Canberra yesterday, the Health Minister was accused of having "parroted" the views of the Catholic church on abortion and euthanasia, but failing to reflect the church's criticism of mandatory detention for asylum seekers.
Mr Abbott said his views were his own and he did not support something "just because it is the view of the Catholic church or the Howard Government".
But James Wilson, a year 10 student from Melbourne's Wesley College, suggested Mr Abbott had not reflected the church's criticism of mandatory detention but had parroted the Catholic line on abortion and euthanasia.

It seems that when any subject having to do with religion comes up, there is usually someone who begins, "I was raised a Catholic, but…." These former Catholics, or even present Catholics, appear to think that it is appropriate conversation to dump out their problems with the Church for all to hear.
The very best way we can respond to negative attitudes and talk about our Catholic Church is to be, as much as we can, a living example of the Gospel spirit.
Whether at the office or at the pool, may all our words and actions serve to show the world that we are the Church of love.

Jesus replied, "You are Peter (petros) and on this rock (petra) I will build my Church and the gates of Hell will NEVER prevail against it".
Jesus renamed Simon and gave him the title of the Rock - so that his faith (and therefore the faith of all his successors) would continue to safeguard the truth in the Church, safe from the attack of Satan.

In a surprisingly tough message, which included criticism of the Catholic Church as well as a defense of his government's Marxist ideology, Fidel Castro welcomed Pope John Paul II to Cuba, but made no effort to conceal their differences.
According to local analysts, Castro took this provocative line in order to emphasize the comparisons and contrasts between the Catholic Church and the Cuban socialist government.
He mentioned the alleged mistakes of the Church in an indirect effort to deflect attention from the obvious mistakes made by his Communist allies, the analysts suggested.
