The USS Croatan (CVE-25) (previously AVG-25 then ACV-25) was an escort aircraft carrier launched 1 August 1942 by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Co., Seattle, Washington, under a Maritime Commission contract; sponsored by Mrs.
Croatan was placed out of commission in reserve at Norfolk 20 May 1946.
Reactivated, Croatan was assigned to MSTS in a noncommissioned status, manned by a civilian crew on 16 June 1958.

The Croatan were a Native American tribe living in the coastal areas of what is now North Carolina.
They were on good terms with English settlers of the Roanoke Island colony, and there has been speculation that the survivors of the colony joined the Croatan.
The modern Lumbee tribe has claimed descent from the Croatan and the English survivors.

The lion symbol has been traced to the Kendall family, and its presence at Croatan probably links it to a "Master" Kendall who was a member of the Ralph Lane colony on Roanoke Island in 1585 to 1586.

The island designated "Croatoan" (modern spelling Croatan) on John White's smaller 1586 map of the North Carolina coast was the homeland of the Carolina Algonkian society of the same name.
These tests have confirmed that much of the town of Croatan, capital of the chiefdom, is still intact under the modern sand dunes which cover it to depths ranging from 20 centimeters to about 5 meters.
While we are now sure that the Croatan occupation of the site extends to the first decades of the 1700s, it is hoped that future excavations will reveal artifacts specific to the late 1500s and contemporary with the Roanoke colony.
