Stipe Mesić, the candidate of the Croatian People's Party (HNS), supported by other parties in the "Group of Four" (HSS Croatian Peasants Party, IDS Istrian Democratic Assembly and LS Liberal Party), won the first place at the presidential elections that were carried out on 24 January.
Mate Granić of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) came in third with 22.47 per cent of the vote, and an independent candidate, Slaven Letica, was on the fourth place with 4.14 per cent.
The candidate of the New Croatia (NH) party, Ante Prkačin, came in eighth with 0.28 per cent of the vote, while the last in the standing was independent candidate and former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Justice, Zvonimir Šeparović, with 0.27 per cent of the vote.

Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) was founded by Franjo Tudjman in 1989 originally as a platform-movement-like party but was soon transformed into a nationalist movement.
Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) was founded in 1904 under Stjepan Radic and Vlatko Macek and represented roughly 80 to 90 percent of the Croatian electorate during the period between World War I and World War II.
Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) was founded in 1990, and, despite its keen sense of nationalism and xenophobia, the HSP did not present a substantial threat to the HDZ’s power base largely because it has had a tendency to fragment.

Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan said in Zagreb on 25 November that his Social Democrats (SDP) have clearly lost the 23 November parliamentary elections to the conservative Croatian Democratic Community (HDZ), dpa reported (see "RFE/RL Newsline," 24 November 2003).
Popular Party Christian Democratic (PPCD) Chairman Iurie Rosca called on the OSCE members to reject the Russian plan at their December Maastricht meeting and "not to allow Moldova's destruction." Both opposition parties called on Moldovans to be ready to defend the country's independence and constitutional democracy.
The extraparliamentary Democratic Party, one of the 22 parties, nonetheless said earlier the Russian plan is in "need of improvements." The Democrats re-elected former parliamentary speaker Dumitru Diacov as party chairman at a conference held on 22 November, Flux and Infotag reported.

After the death of Radic, the Croats followed Dr. Macek and the Croatian peasant party as one front in the elections of 1935 and 1938, although not all Croatian voters were members of the Croatian peasant party.
This is evident from his attitude during the war when he took the direction of the Croatian peasant party, although his persecution and incarceration at the hands of the Pavelic regime curtailed his activities.
The Croatian peasant party under Macek’s leadership committed a fatal error when it joined the Yugoslavian government in exile during the war and especially when its leading members Subasic and Suteja joined Tito’s government at the end of the war.

The right wing opposition Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) of late President Franjo Tudjman said it does not expect the breakup of the governing coalition, as the coalition members' desire to hang on to power takes precedence over the country's interests.
Croatian President Stjepan Mesic noted that no reason was given for the withdrawal of the ministers, which he said was done in a way that is inappropriate in democracies.
But the leaders of the other four governing coalition parties said it is up to the parties to appoint and replace ministers, although they all condemned the arrogance with which the HSLS withdrew its ministers.

The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) was backed by 28 percent of 4,000 people questioned, with a significant 10-percent advantage over the ruling center-left coalition's main Social Democratic Party (SDP), the poll showed.
The SDP's main partner in the five-party coalition, the Croatian Peasants' Party, held third position with the support of 11 percent of those interviewed.
A recently formed coalition made up of the Social Liberal Party and the Democratic Center, the latter being founded by HDZ dissidents, was backed by nine percent of the people surveyed for the poll.
