The Indians were generous, because at this season of the year they had plenty of everything in contrast to the scarcity of their winter fare; and the white man was new to them, though they had heard of others wrecked on the coast years before.
Through the intercession of the Indian Manteo, who had relatives on the barrier island of Croatoan, friendly relations with the Croatoan Indians were re-established, but the others remained aloof.

No cross was found carved into the tree, so it was assumed that the settlers had relocated to Croatoan Island, 50 miles to the south.
The most accepted theory is that the settlers did relocate to Croatoan Island and may have eventually become members of the tribe.
