A series of mysterious clues and coincidences eventually lead Frank back to the Yellow House and later to an encounter with Crocell's ghost, who warns him to "sit out" the apocalyptic battle between good and evil or face unspeakable horrors in the afterlife.
As Crocell points out in his ghostly visit at the end, Frank has followed in his onetime neighbor's footsteps and become the "town spook," as it were.
And assuming (as Crocell does) that Satan will emerge victorious, Frank will be shown mercy -- but if he rejects the deal, he'll be sent to an unimaginably horrible place in hell.

 The Rogue's Eye View
The concept of Frank Black becoming the town boogeyman is a touching one, and the execution is smart and engaging enough to forgive some of the whack-me-over-the-head visual metaphors the Wongs seem to revel in.
And then to add yet another twist -- the spirit of Crocell returns as another emissary of Frank's supernatural nemesis, Legion, and we can take heart as our hero rediscovers his resolve, withstanding the temptation to just give it all up and quit fighting.
If I were to quibble, it would only be in regard to the overtness of Legion's latest play for Frank's allegiance.
