Crockett, the county seat and largest community in Houston County, is at the junction of U.S. Highway 287 and State highways 7, 19, and 21 in the central part of the county.
Crockett is said to have camped near the townsite in January 1836 on his way to San Antonio.
Crockett grew steadily; it topped the 5,000 mark in the early 1960s and reached 7,000 during the 1980s.

Crockett reciprocated their generosity by working for about a year to discharge his father's debts, which totaled seventy-six dollars, and subsequently returned to school for six months.
Crockett apparently thought himself a serious candidate, but he was likely only a convenient political tool to the Whigs, an independent frontiersman with a national reputation perhaps the equal of Jackson's who opposed Jackson on key political issues.
Crockett's reputation and that of the other survivors was not, as some have suggested, sullied by their capture.

The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, assisted by items on loan from The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for American History (CAH), is celebrating the “King of the Wild Frontier” with a temporary exhibit "Sunrise in His Pocket: The Life, Legend and Legacy of Davy Crockett," on display through Aug. 18.
Although Crockett was in Texas only for three months or so, his influence on the creation and evolution of the founding myth of the state has been enormous, Carleton said.
The exhibit explores Crockett as the quintessential frontiersman, the inspiration for the American image of the “hunter-hero,” a symbol of the “Age of Common Man,” a martyr for the cause of America's Manifest Destiny and a celebrity of popular culture.

East Texas was full of Jacksonians, and Crockett was no longer on their good side due to his opposition to many of Andrew Jackson’s policies.
Crockett actually declined an official leadership position in the fort, choosing instead to hold the post of “a high private.” The Mounted Tennessee Volunteers were given the defense of the weakest position in the fort, the wooden palisade extending from the Alamo chapel across to the south wall.
Whether he was or not, Crockett, a 49-year old man who went to Texas out of despair in hopes of finding his fortune, died a hero fighting a small battle in a remote frontier.
