A crocodile can be any of the 14 species of large, water-loving reptiles in the family Crocodylidae (sometimes classified instead as the subfamily Crocodylinae).
The term is also used more loosely to include all members of the order Crocodylia: that is, the true crocodiles; the alligators and caymans (family Alligatoridae); and the Gharial (family Gavialidae).
The crocodiles, often just called crocs, are reptiles that live in a large portion of the tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia.

Crocodilia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They are the closest living relatives of the dinosaurs, as well as the birds.
The group is often spelled "Crocodylia" for consistency with the genus Crocodylus Laurenti, 1768.
However, Richard Owen used the -i- spelling when he published the name in 1842, so by the usual rules of scientific classification his name has priority.

The Crocodylia have undergone at least three separate episodes of adaptive radiation during their history.
In the Crocodylia, however, this is not the case.
The Mesosuchia evolved in the lower and upper Jurassic and are excellent transitional fossils between the Protosuchians and the Eusuchians (modern crocodiles, alligators, caimans and gavials).

Crocodylia includes living alligators, crocodiles, and gharials, and some of their closest extinct relatives.
Older books may use the word "Crocodylia" to refer to living crocodylians and a large assemblage of extinct animals extending back to the Triassic period (roughly 245 million years ago).
More recently, we have restricted the name Crocodylia to the last common ancestor of living alligators, crocodiles, and gharials, and all of its descendents.

Comparison of minimum divergence time from the fossil record with different measures of molecular distance indicates evolutionary rate heterogeneity within Crocodylia.

This study addresses this problem by documenting and comparing cephalic vascular structures and patterns in the extant archosaur clades Crocodylia (Alligator mississippiensis, Crocodylus spp.) and Aves (Anas platyrhynchos, Struthio) and makes hypotheses of homology based on similarity.
These findings are discussed in light of the radical morphological changes that occur in birds (e.g., brain enlargement) and crocodilians (e.g., basicranial metamorphosis) to produce theirhighly apomorphic head anatomies that considerably deviate from the ancestral condition and were hypothesized to significantly effect and alter head vasculature in extant archosaurs.
The striking conclusion of the research is that despite their different cephalic morphologies, the vascular structures and patterns in Aves and Crocodylia are very similar.
