The catoblepas is also known as a gorgon, the name of another monster that can petrify with a glance.
These creatures resembled combinations of dogs and wolves, leading the naturalist to speculate that they were, in fact, hybrids of the two animals.
Pliny claimed that leucrocottas lived in India, and were combinations of lions, stags and badgers (while Pliny identified the head as being that of a badger, later writers said that the monster had a horse's head).

The scientific name of the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) was taken from the mythological Crocotta, and there are some similarities in the description.
Local folklore about hyena often gives them powers such as gender switching (males and females are difficult to distinguish), shape shifting, and human speech - all of which encourages the belief that hyena may have contributed to the original myth of the crocotta.

Description: In mythological tales, the lupine Crocotta of India stalks humans and dogs, feasting upon their flesh at every opportunity.
It is a wonderfully lazy beast, and rather than risk exhaustion from chasing after prey, prefers to imitate the sound of a man vomiting in order to lure curious canines towards its hiding spot.
As every Crocotta knows, dogs are unable to resist the vaguely intriguing sound of a retching human.
