  Samuel Crompton - inventor
Crompton had intended to use it to provide yarn for his own weaving, but he soon discovered it paid better to spin for other weavers.
Crompton invested in a bleaching works at Darwen which failed, and his Bolton firm also hit problems and was broken up.
Crompton saw out the last years of his life subsisting on an annuity of £63, bought by yet another subscription, and he died in 1827 at the age of 74.

Source: Parish register said, "Sarah 21 Jul 1742 widow of James Henthorn from Crompton Fold Burried." (Problem: How could she be his widow if she died in 1742 and he died in 1747?).
He was thus able to have a major influence on this large family all of which stayed locally in the Crompton Fold area.
CHILDREN: What is remarkable in view of the health hazards of the time, is that he and his wife, Sarah, had a family of 13 (4 sons and 8 daughters) surviving into adult life and being alive at the time of their father's death in 1814.

Crompton was 15 when he started working on a spinning jenny in the Hall'i'th'Wood mill, Bolton.
Although it was a boon for them, once the device was made public, the cotton manufacturers took advantage of it, having given only trivial compensation for the rights to its inventor.
Having sold the rights to his machine, long before, Crompton was unable to benefit.

Samuel Crompton is perhaps best known as the Bolton born inventor of the famous "spinning mule" which was to play such an important role in the 18th and 19th century development of Manchester's textile industry and in the foundation of mass-production techniques which were pioneered here.
Although a great inventor, and the results of his work made fortunes for those who used them, Crompton himself was no businessman, and he failed to patent his invention, selling his invention for only £60, and he was to die in poverty.
Samuel Crompton died in 1827 and is buried in St Peter's, Bolton's Parish Church.

Roscoe Fold was built around 1800 and was totally isolated by farms, with Holts farm lying opposite.
Roscoe Fold School now stands on the site and adjacent are new flats, this area was originally the Church Hall the very first school and here is its story.

He spent the rest of his life trying to gain redress for the prosperity brought to the industry which was a five fold increase in production to Lancashire's textile manufacturers.
Beneath this stone are interred the mortal remains of Samuel Crompton, of Bolton, late of Hall i'th' Wood, in the township of Tonge, inventor of the Spinning Machine called the Mule; who departed this life on the 26th day of June 1827, aged 72 years.

In 1764 Hargreaves patented his "spinning jenny" (named, according to legend, for his daughter), a machine based on the spinning wheel but with several spindles working in unison; the machine, however, was slow and inefficient.
Only in 1769 Arkwright built his roller-spinning machine and the first industrial spinning mill was established, using horses for power, and in 1779 Samuel Crompton patented his "spinning mule", a ten-yard long machine with hundreds of spindles working simultaneously.
