 | | Cromwell is a handsome period-piece, detailing the English Civil War, and the personal struggles of Oliver Cromwell and King Charles I. At issue is the supreme power of the throne, versus the will of the people, as they slowly drift from an absolute monarchy toward self-government. |
 | | As a film, purporting to us that Cromwell is the hero, featuring his charisma, determination, as well as his political and military skill, it is a dismal failure. |
 | | The end result, as far as being convinced that Cromwell is the sympathetic character, is an utter waste, in view of the beautifully photographed and directed film, that otherwise succeeds in depicting the lavish courts, the bleak chambers of Parliament, authentic British countryside and well-choreographed battle scenes. |
