From the very beginning of the film Cromwell is given a far more pre-eminent role in the lead-up and conduct of the war than that which he occupied.
Although the real Cromwell was a little known backbencher before the war and was not really involved in its ignition, Hughes places him as a personal friend of John Pym, the leader of the Parliamentary opposition, and makes him deeply involved in the start of war.
Cromwell was not one of the Five Members, all of whom fled the House before the king’s arrival, and the incident occurred when the war was still several months in the future.

 Barnes & Noble.com - Cromwell -- Ken Hughes - DVD - Wide Screen
Cromwell (Richard Harris) is the Anglican religious fanatic who fights corruption and Catholicism with equal zeal, while King Charles (Alec Guinness) is the vacillating monarch who believes his crown gives him a direct pipeline to the wisdom of God.
The nature of historical films is to give us a feel for the period and an appreciation for the people and the events of their times.
The weaknesses of the film are most readily revealed in the personalisation of the conflict as though it was only about the religious sensibilities of two men.

Cromwell (1970): Richard Harris, Alec Guinness, Robert Morley - PopMatters Film Review
Cromwell was a reluctant rebel but, like many of his contemporaries, he was much more interested in preserving the economic and political power of his class than in sharing it with what he came to view as a fearsome common rabble.
Hughes also spins from thin air a dazzling pre-war parliamentary career for Cromwell: in fact, Cromwell was a lowly MP who gained political power as a result of his genius as a battlefield commander in the 1640s, years after the passionate, intellectual struggles in Westminster which precipitated the civil wars.
In 1970, when the film was released at the height of the anti-Vietnam War movement, the idea that a military officer might once again occupy the White House must have seemed absurd (and dangerous).

Well, "Cromwell" is a new movie and shares all the virtues and a few of the faults of its type with the virtues coming out ahead of the faults.
Charles I is not quite the tyrant he was and Cromwell is portrayed as a reluctant leader, sometimes a dictator only if you read between the lines and a man whose religious zeal is indicated without making it the all-consuming passion it undoubtedly was.

Timothy Dalton's Web Site - Review of Cromwell   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Cromwell is a handsome period-piece, detailing the English Civil War, and the personal struggles of Oliver Cromwell and King Charles I. At issue is the supreme power of the throne, versus the will of the people, as they slowly drift from an absolute monarchy toward self-government.
As a film, purporting to us that Cromwell is the hero, featuring his charisma, determination, as well as his political and military skill, it is a dismal failure.
The end result, as far as being convinced that Cromwell is the sympathetic character, is an utter waste, in view of the beautifully photographed and directed film, that otherwise succeeds in depicting the lavish courts, the bleak chambers of Parliament, authentic British countryside and well-choreographed battle scenes.

Originally filmed under the title of ‘Cromwell and Fairfax’, To Kill a King is a solidly executed attempt to provide a deeper understanding of the personalities and clashing philosophies at the heart of the English Civil War and its aftermath.
It is a film propelled by ideas rather than action; a sober, serious-minded tale in which events unfold in murky debating chambers and bleak, draughty castles rather than the fields of battle.
The film is technically impressive with cinematographer Eigil Bryld capturing the period in treacly tones and fine ensemble playing from a British cast including such reliables as James Bolam and Corin Redgrave, and Everett giving one of his most effective performances as the imperious monarch.
