The Cromwell was a the product of further development of British cruiser tanks, and was designed as the replacement for the Crusader tank, which was fast becoming obsolete.
The Cromwell still had revisions to make before service, most notably upgunning from the 6 pounder (2.7 kg) to the 75 mm gun, and it was not until June 1944 that it first saw action during Operation Overlord, the allied invasion of Normandy.

The significance of the Cromwell Tank is that the armoured regiments of the 7th Armoured Division were equipped mainly with Cromwell Tanks while stationed in Thetford Forest, and I believe the Division was the first formation to take the then brand new British tank into action.
The final development of the Cromwell Tank was carried out by Rolls-Royce who fitted the tank with a Meteor engine (a modified Merlin Spitfire engine) which gave the tank phenomenal acceleration and a top speed of well over 50 mph.

The Centaur was developed alongside the better known Cromwell tank, the difference between the two being that the Centaur used the 395 hp Liberty engine, that had powered most British Cruiser tanks since the start of the war.
Originally, the tanks were to be mounted on the LCTs without their engines, but when the setup was demonstrated for Montgomery, he allegedly commented that it was a shame to carry the tanks all the way to Normandy and then leave them on the LCTs.
Thus, the tanks went across the channel with their engines in place and were to be landed once their role as off-shore artillery had been fullfilled.

As to markings, the OP tanks would have been part of the field regiments in armoured divisions and SP field regiments.
This tank is made up from two hulks recovered from Salisbury plain training area in 1990.
Centaur OP tanks were not used on D Day but they were used in Normandy as part of the 21st Army Group.
