Immigration to the area that is now Crookston began when the St. Paul and Pacific announced in 1872 that a railroad route was to extend to the Canadian border and would cross the Red Lake River where the city now stands.
The City of Crookston, the Polk County seat, was first settled in 1872 and incorporated as a city Feb. 14, 1879.
Crookston is located in the Red River Valley of the North Basin, one of the world's richest agricultural areas.

Crookston is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota.
The land in the immediate vicinity of Crookston is not connected with any verifiable Native American or European historic events or circumstances until transfer in the "Treaty of Old Crossing" of 1863 and the "Treaty of Old Crossing" of 1864.
Today, Crookston is the site of the University of Minnesota Crookston which began as an agricultural high school and college and has since become a four-year institution with a full college curriculum.

Crookston, located in the Minnechaduza Valley in north central Nebraska, was named for W.T. Crook, yardmaster for the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad being built through Cherry County.
The government warehouses were moved from Valentine to Crookston and supplies were shipped in by rail, then hauled with horse and buggy to the Indians on the near-by reservation.
To the passerby, Crookston may appear to be only a "wide place in the road," but to many who at one time lived there, memories are abundant.
