The objectives of the Croquet project are very ambitious: to give everyone the possibility to create shared and linkable 3D virtual worlds available to all users on a LAN or the Internet.
From the Croquet FAQ: "The Croquet project is an effort to develop a new open source computer operating system built from the ground up to enable deep collaboration between teams of users.
Croquet enables this communication by acting as the equivalent of a broadband conferencing system built on top of a 3D user interface and a peer-to-peer network architecture".

Many croquet players are preparing to fly north to their summer residences, while the rest of us look forward with mixed feelings to a tropical summer in Florida.
But now - in mid-April - the project is solidly on track and the site is abuzz with activity: grading berms, planting trees, constructing sidewalks and roadways, putting down thousands of square feet of sod to stabilize the raw, sculpted earth around the 12 croquet courts and the soon-to-be clubhouse.

 Croquet is coming
Croquet looks and feels like a virtual reality game, but in terms of its development and goals is radically different.
Croquet, on the other hand, is open source software, which means that anyone can access the code or the tools and create, extend, or adapt the virtual space to their own ends.
Croquet is also different from many other educational gaming projects in that it is an attempt to overcome the limitations of traditional online learning environments.
