	SPITZER SUPPORTS CONTINUED OPERATION OF CROSS-SOUND CABLE
		New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer today filed comments with the United States Secretary of Energy expressing support for the continued operation of the Cross-Sound electric power cable between Long Island and Connecticut.
		The Cross-Sound cable is a 24-mile long bulk power transmission line that runs beneath Long Island Sound and terminates in New Haven, Connecticut and Brookhaven, New York.
		While the cable was completed over a year ago, at the time of the August 14 flout, the Cross-Sound cable was not operating due to permitting objections from the State of Connecticut.

		We believe that lobsters in Long Island Sound would be unaffected by the temporary increase in suspended sediment resulting from the proposed jetting operation because they are mobile and naturally occur in turbid areas.
		Long Island Sound is also home to marine turtles that are listed as State or Federal Endangered or Threatened Species, according to the Connecticut DEP and the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service.
		Although the proposed installation schedule may overlap the time period that marine turtles may be found in Long Island Sound, they are mobile and should be able to avoid the jet-plow.

		The earliest proposal to span the Long Island Sound came in 1938 when the Commerce Committee of the U.S. Senate discussed the possibility of a bridge beginning at Orient Point, New York, the eastern tip of Long Island's North Fork, and ending at either Groton, Connecticut or Watch Hill, Rhode Island.
		The Eastern Long Island Sound Crossing was to have been an island-hopping span that would cross Plum Island, Great Gull Island and Fishers Island.
		Great Gull Island, the second of the islands that would have been crossed, is a bird sanctuary owned by the museum of natural history.

		Seeing that the way we were approaching the finish line I decided to make my crossing closer to the buoy anchored out in the water.
		The rower chose to head closer to shore, which should have resulted in her crossing after me. However, the race officials gave the rower the signal first, and then after what seemed an improbably long delay gave my finishing signal.
