Cross-country equestrianism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cross country equestrian jumping is an endurance test, and is the second phase of the sport of eventing.
At the advanced level, cross country fences can be 3'11" high, with up to a 5 ft 11 in (1.80 m) spread at the top and 8'10" spread at the bottom of the fence.
The object of the endurance test is to prove the speed, endurance and jumping ability of the true cross-country horse when he is well trained and brought to the peak of condition.

The challenge is to demonstrate that a supremely fit horse, capable of completing the cross country phase on time, also has the training to perform in a relaxed, precise manner.
In addition to normal jumping skills, eventing showjumping tests the fitness of the horse and rider, generally being held after the cross country phase so the horse and rider will both be tired.
These fences consist of very solidly built natural objects (telephone poles, stone walls, etc.) as well as various obstacles such as ponds and streams - based on objects that would commonly occur in the countryside.

Thoroughbred_horse - The real meaning from Timesharetalk wikipedia
The breed is most suited for the cross-country phase, due to its long stride and natural speed, as well as its athletic jump.
Of all the equestrian sports, the Thoroughbred is probably most suited for eventing, and dominates the highest levels: almost all Olympic horses are full or part-Thoroughbred.
While warmblooded breeds are preferred over the Thoroughbred in both dressage and show jumping, the breed can occasionally compete at high levels in dressage, and the Grand Prix ring in show jumping.

Since 1960, when Walter Lorch brought the first Trakehner stallion into this country as the basis of the renowned Muschamp Stud, this famed German breed, now in its 11th generation in England, has repeatedly proved itself in competitive equestrianism.
Its reputation as a top-class sport horse widened some 12 years ago when Walter sponsored four-in-hand driving trial whip, Karen Bassett, in her move from ponies to horses, providing her with a team of Trakehners.
Under Walter’s patronage once again, the Trakehner is about to show its all-round qualities of temperament, outstanding paces and reliability in a different equestrian field.
