Topic: Crossbar switch

  U.S. Patent: 5278548 - Buffered feedthrough crossbar switch - January 11, 1994
An improved crossbar switch in which internal buffering is performed for input signals across the chip and in which an extra input for each output channel of the crossbar switch element is provided.
This is accomplished by the present invention by a basic crossbar switch element which is capable of buffering each signal input to provide a buffered input to the switch element multiplexer array and which also provides a buffered feedthrough of the input signal to a separate output terminal of the switch element.
An object of the invention is to provide a basic crossbar switch element which buffers each data input to furnish a buffered data input to the crossbar switch element multiplexer array and a buffered feedthrough of the input data to a separate buffered data output terminal of the switch element.

Crossbar switch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crossbar switches have a characteristic matrix of switches between the inputs to the switch and the output of the switch.
Crossbar switches are most famously used in information processing applications such as telephony and packet switching, but they are also used in applications such as mechanical sorting machines with multiple inputs.
As computer technologies have improved, crossbar switches have found uses in systems such as the multistage interconnection networks that connect the various processing units in a uniform memory access parallel processor to the array of memory elements.

Telephone World - Western Electric Crossbar Telephone Switching Systems
Crossbar telephone switching systems were developed by LM Ericsson of Sweden in the 1930s.
The concept of the crossbar is the crossbar mechanism operates on a matrix concept where dialed digits would change the position of the crossbar and connect to other parts of the matrix.
The first installation of a #5 Crossbar was on July 11, 1948 in Media, PA.The #5 Crossbar became the “bread and butter” telephone switch of a growing nation in the 1950s and 1960s.

 Nick Mckeown's paper
Crossbar switches are widely used for switched backplanes because of their simplicity.
A crossbar switch is shown in Figure 4; by closing several crosspoints at the same time, the switch can transfer packets between multiple ports simultaneously.
It considers all the packets waiting to be transferred across the switch fabric and selects a configuration of the crossbar, ensuring that at any one instance each input is connected to at most one output, and that each output is connected to at most one input.

EETimes.com - Flexible I/O speeds data switch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
The core of a network switch or router is the switching fabric, for which many alternatives have been proposed-from simple shared buses to complex multistage networks.
In the basic architecture of an N x N crossbar enhanced using this proposed technique, each traffic source (destination) is connected to more than one input or output port of the crossbar through lightweight, configurable hardware layers.
If we define the utilization of the crossbar as the percentage of the maximum switching capacity that is used, we use the maximum possible data transfers.

NxN Optical crossbar switch matrix (US5255332)
An optical crossbar switch matrix for use in switching optical signals from a first set of optical fibers to a second set of optical fibers, in any order, which is characterized by having a matrix of rows and columns of diffraction gratings formed in a semiconductor heterostructure.
Each grating is independently biased with either a forward or reverse bias voltage to switch the grating between a reflective state and a transmissive state.
The gratings are oriented at an angle relative to the rows and columns so that when the Bragg condition for the light received from an optical film is met, a portion of the light is diffracted from the row in which it is propagating into a column toward another optical fiber.

 PROJECT: Crossbar
The Crossbar is an effects signal switcher which uses a special circuit called a crossbar switch to route signals from a guitar, through up to 7 out of 8 possible effects loops, IN ANY ORDER, and finally out to the amp.
The key idea is that a rotary switch switches one input wire to the input of any of eight effects.
The input jack (which paradoxically must be viewed as the guitar's output) gets the first rotary switch pole, and it can be switched to the input of either seven effects or the output jack, which counts as one of the places for the input to go.

Cisco 12000 Series Internet Router: Switch Fabric   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
The switch fabric is an NxN non-blocking crossbar switch fabric where N stands for the maximum number of LCs that can be supported in the chassis (this includes the GRP).
The switch fabric cards in the 12016 and 12416 are not easy to insert, and may require a little bit of force.
The unit of transfer across the crossbar switch fabric is always fixed-size packets, also referred to as Cisco cells, which are easier to schedule than variable-size packets.

16-Port Myrinet Switch with 8 LAN ports & 8 SAN ports   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
These 16-port Myrinet switches are based on a 16x16 crossbar switch implemented in a single, custom-VLSI chip (XBar16).
Because of the high degree of these switches, and because of their monitoring features, they are particularly well-suited for large clusters.
In a typical application of the M2LM-SW16 switch pictured below, the 8 SAN ports connect via SAN cables to hosts with Myrinet/SAN interfaces within a cabinet to form a sub-cluster, and the 8 LAN ports are used for cabinet-to-cabinet, switch-to-switch connections that form the overall, scalable-network topology.

HP: For circuits, swap silicon for molecules | Tech News on ZDNet
The difference is that crossbar latches--which consist of a grid of microscopic wires linked by molecules at their intersections--are far smaller and, potentially, far cheaper to make because they are produced using processes more akin to inkjet printing rather than the ornate etching processes required for today's chips.
HP has already shown how crossbar latches can be used in memory.
Adoption of crossbars across the industry could also lead to royalties for HP, which may try to license it, added Stan Williams, director of the QSR.

EETimes.com - Researchers offer alternative to typical crossbar design
The growing importance of crossbar switch matrices, now used for on-chip interconnect as well as for switching fabric in routers, has led to increased study of the best ways to build these parts.
The obvious way to implement a crossbar switch fabric, according to presenter Tsui, is to simply route inputs horizontally and outputs vertically, and then to place a pass transistor at each intersection.
Setting up the switch requires n-squared control bits, and, more important for high-bandwidth interconnect, the performance of each connection is limited by the on-resistance of the pass transistor and the capacitance of both the input and output lines, all of which must be long enough to span the entire matrix in a fully populated switch.
