Crossbuck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crossbuck with white background and fl lettering, as used in the United States and Australia
A crossbuck is a sign composed of two slats of wood or metal of equal length, fastened together on a pole in a saltire formation (resembling the letter "x").
Crossbucks are usually used as traffic signs to indicate level railway crossings, sometimes supplemented by electrical warnings of flashing lights, a bell, and/or a metal arm that descends to block the road and prevent traffic from crossing the railroad.

One recent innovation in Australia is to provide crossbucks with flashing yellow lights at a distance from the level crossing itself, particularly where there are curves and visibility problems.
All crossings in the United States are required to be marked by at least a crossbuck; most crossings that intersect rural roads have this setup.
It includes an enhanced crossbuck, reflective and with red lettering, and also a reflective plate reading "YIELD" below the crossbuck, whose sides are bent backwards in order to catch and reflect at a right angle the light of an approaching train.

The third and least common version was a pole-mounted lower-quadrant signal suspended above an octagonal steel frame that surrounded the target, presumably to protect both banner and motor box from damage from passing vehicles.
The wigwag, the last "Model 10" in active use, was replaced by standard highway flashers per the aforementioned grandfathering laws.
The Model 10 was distinguished by its short, low-hanging cantilever and use of crossbucks.

Raleigh--The North Carolina Department of Transportation is working with freight railroads across the state to install new reflective warning signs at 600 rail-highway crossings to increase visibility and improve safety.
During the next several months, new reflective crossbucks will be installed at rail-highway crossings along 19 smaller private railroads, known as shortlines.
North Carolina is the second state to install the reflective signs that eventually will become the new federally required standard for all railroad crossings in the country.

Since Gleason has failed to offer admissible evidence that the crossbucks were not reflectorized, the Court finds that she has failed to raise a genuine factual dispute on the issue.
In light of the admissible evidence in the record, the Court must conclude that the crossbucks were operating at the Dancer Avenue crossing on the morning of the collision.
Since the parties do not dispute that federal monies were expended to install the crossbucks at the Dancer Avenue crossing, and no genuine factual dispute exists as to whether the crossbucks were actually operating, Gleason's claim that Soo Line failed to provide proper traffic control devices is preempted by federal law.

The goal of this study was to determine the best configuration of retroreflective material on Railroad Crossing (crossbuck) signs and posts for improving the visibility and safety of passive highway-railroad grade crossings at night.
Five configurations for marking crossbucks and posts were developed and installed at five passive grade crossings on the Virginia Southern Railroad line between Fort Mitchell and Green Bay, Virginia.
Although the sample size was limited by the time constraints of the study, results indicated that the double-sided crossbuck with retroreflective material along the full length of both sides of both posts was preferred.

The traditional “Railroad Crossing” crossbuck sign installed at 60% of highway/rail grade crossings in the U.S. is inadequate and should be replaced with “Stop” or “Yield” signs, according to the Federal Highway Administration, which is now encouraging state officials to install such signs at grade crossings.
This will provide drivers clear direction to stop or yield at railroad grade crossings, which we hope will save many lives.” The AAR cited a U.S. Department of Transportation Inspector General report that said driver error or poor judgment was responsible for 94% of public grade crossing accidents and 87% of fatalities.

It examines four specific warning device classes: crossbucks only, STOP signs, flashing lights and gates.
There are other types of warnings, including yield signs and none; however, the number of collisions at these crossings are too few to perform meaningful analyses.
