 Crossfire
A crossfire is a military term for the siting of weapons (often automatic weapons such as machine guns) so that their arcs of fire overlap.
The significance of crossfires is that they rendered useless what had been the most effective weapon of warfare since the Greek phalanx: massed infantry.
Three things changed between WWI and WWII that rendered the crossfire obsolete: the advance of armored vehicles (especially tanks), the advent of aerial bombardment, and the invention of the proximity fuse.

 Crossfire (movie)
Crossfire is a 1947 film dealing with anti-semitism, as did that year's best film Oscar winner, Gentleman's Agreement.
The film also addresses the post World War II issue of soldiers being released from the military with no training other than as soldiers.
The movie was based on the novel The Brick Foxhole[?] by Richard Brooks[?], with the difference that in the novel the victim was homosexual instead of jewish.

 crossfire
When multiple crossfires overlap, the machine guns provide each other with mutual protection, and it is theoretically impossible for infantry to reach the guns.
Crossfires were first used in World War I, shortly after the invention of the machine gun.
Crossfires are limited in application, however, because they require a flat plain for greatest effect.

I would classify this movie as a mystery, and it slowly meanders in several different directions with very little drama until the very end.
"Crossfire" was adapted from the novel "The Brick Foxhole" by Richard Brooks, which concerned a gay Marine who was beaten to death by his fellow soldiers.
"Crossfire" is sometimes presented as the sole example of a "film noir" social conscious picture and as proof that such an animal could exist.

Reason: Shoot the Messenger: Hollywood calls Western Union again.
The modern message movie may be traced to 1947, when Elia Kazan (who would go on to direct such issue films as Pinky, A Face in the Crowd, Wild River, and On the Waterfront) came out with Gentlemen’s Agreement, a lecture on the dangers of anti-Semitism.
Though ostensibly set in the present day, John Q exists in a kind of eternal movie 1975 where cars are always being repossessed, the factory is perpetually shutting down, hospitals are larded with religious statuary, an honest working man can’t get a break, and even the telephones are rotary.
In today’s message movies, too often the issues are presented not as fodder for stirring speeches or rabble-rousing drama but because their makers seem to believe the audience needs remedial education.

"Crossfire" examines anti-Semitism is a very clever way, but the film was based on a book about the murder of a gay man--not a Jewish man. No doubt the murder of a Jewish man was more appropriate for the time.
In the movie he was revealed as a former police officer from St. Louis who detested Jews, killing kindly Sam Levene, who invited him into his Washington, D.C. residence for a drink.
Mitchum and fellow soldiers periodically surface in the darkened theater to hold quiet strategy sessions, focused on the task at hand of clearing Cooper and proving their steadfast belief that Ryan is the killer of Levene.

 Crossfire Trail
Tom Selleck has a lean, weathered face that sits nicely atop a horse and beneath a broad-brimmed hat; he plays a canny cowboy who's come to make good on a promise to a dying man and ends up caught between a beautiful woman (Virginia Madsen) and a wicked man in fl--a couple of them, actually.
Crossfire Trail has just about every element you could ask for (a Sioux war party, a cruel hired gun, a shootout in the street, even a cattle stampede), but it spins them out with such clean efficiency that you can't help but enjoy it.
Tom Selleck and Director, Simon Wincer have collaborated on three Westerns: "Monte Walsh", "Quigley Down Under", and this film, "Crossfire Trail." All three films are the direct modern descendants of the great, archetypal westerns made by the collaboration of John Wayne and Director, John Ford.

Hence, the attacks against the movie rest on the claim that its literal acceptance of the Gospels makes it unhistorical and anti-Semitic.
