Crossing Delancey (1988) is a pleasant, intelligent romantic comedy, cleverly and tightly written and winningly acted, which presents some very old Jewish--and by now, universal--values in a most refreshing, contemporary way, blending humor and pathos, wit and romance.
Not only does Crossing Delancey get the most out of the main characters by approaching them with a certain sympathetic playfulness, but it also uses secondary or supporting characters in a way unsurpassed by any film.
Crossing Delancey is rich in ethnic--or better, Jewish--traditions and terms.

‘Crossing Delancey’ a clever reversal of classic comedy - March 26, 2006
Susan Sandler’s romantic comedy about Isabelle Grossman finding out who she is as she finds a man had a brief run off-off Broadway in 1985, was made into a well-received film with Amy Irving in 1988 and has been popular in theaters ever since.
"Crossing Delancey" is a clever reversal of classic comedy in which boy chases girl and the obstacle is an older man. Here the focus is on the girl, not the boy, and the older generation is a woman, and she’s not an obstacle.
In fact, the lack of any real obstacle — other than Izzy’s mistaken idea of her life — to Izzy and Sam getting together keeps "Crossing Delancey" from being more than it is.

 'Crossing Delancey'
oan Miclin Silver peels off your jaded hide in "Crossing Delancey." She asks you to doff your hat, sit in the kitchen and swallow your old-world grandmother's story about a nice Jewish boy next door who sold pickles near Delancey Street and won himself a nice Jewish girl.
In the same way a small European movie takes its time with a simple premise, "Delancey" slowly simmers one big question: Will "Izzy" Grossman (Irving) choose the right man? Her choices are artsy Manhattan author Anton Maes (Krabbe') and humble cuke-jockey Sam Posner (Riegert).
Both men stand on opposite sides of Izzy's emotional divide: her upwardly literary existence as the manager of a snooty Manhattan bookstore, and her roots role as granddaughter of aging Lower East Side chicken-souper "Bubbie" (a bubbling Reizl Bozyk).
