Their subsequent four albums, Steeltown (1984), The Seer (1986), Peace In Our Time (1988) and No Place Like Home (1991) were all certified gold on release and took the bands total record sales tally to over ten million.
Their first live album, Without The Aid of a Safety Net, was recorded in December 1993 at a tumultuous sold out Barrowlands gig and released in June 94.
An unplugged album featuring friends (Steve Harley, Kym Mazelle, Hassam Ramzys Egyptian drummers) was released in 1996 after which Stuart decided it was time for a break; he moved to Nashville and the rest of the band did their own thing for a while.

Fast Forward : What we're gonna do right here is go back. Way back. Big Country.
At a time when digital-synthesized music and the collective "New Wave" was beginning to be all the rage, Big Country debuted with The Crossing, a loud, beautiful, blistering, guitar-driven album that was, and still is, as melodic and scintillating as anything that's been released in the past twenty years.
The Crossing was released in 1983 to almost universal acclaim.
The writing evokes a blue-collar world for sure - the album is loaded with references of the everyday struggles of labor and love of the commonfolk.

The Crossing - Big Country - Song Listings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The unique sound of "In a Big Country" garnered the band considerable attention and a Top 20 single in the U.S. The Crossing, however, is an album whose richness goes beyond the single.
The more subdued "Chance" is more sparse and its personal lyrics are every bit as heartfelt as the more populist-inclined anthems like the wonderful "The Storm" or the thundering "Fields of Fire." The lyrics are straightforward and, despite the grand themes of many of the tracks, manage to steer clear of being overly pretentious.
While this album earned the band a gold record, Big Country's sound and image (reinforced by the members tartan, checked shirts) resulted in them being tagged a novelty and they never duplicated their initial success in America.

The Crossing - Dave Brubeck Quartet - Song Listings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Although just shy of 80 at the time of the two studio sessions which make up this CD, Dave Brubeck still has the drive that he had some 40 years earlier, both as a performer and composer.
Longtime drummer Randy Jones, veteran alto saxophonist Bobby Militello, and the talented young bassist Alec Dankworth all shine in support of the tireless pianist.
All nine compositions appear on disc for the first time, starting with "The Crossing," Brubeck's lively musical vision of a passenger ship getting underway for a long trip across the ocean, though a ship's engines would burn out if they kept up with the intensity of this piece.

Rolling Stone : Big Country: The Crossing : Music Reviews
Generally dispensing with power chords, the group's two lead guitarists, Scotsmen Stuart Adamson (formerly of the Skids) and Bruce Watson, whip up skirling, bagpipelike single-string riffs that, on such crackling tracks as "Fields of Fire," "In a Big Country" and the grandly martial "Harvest Home," are a nonstop, spine-tingling delight.
Even when they address the common helplessness felt in the face of impending nuclear apocalypse in "1000 Stars" ("It's not between you and me/But we are losing"), Big Country aims for the heart, not mere pop hyperbole.
The Crossing is not without flaws: the tone setups cause the guitars to lapse into murk at times, subverting the power of the playing, and the lyrics are occasionally so private–or so poorly thought out–as to be inscrutable.

I'm a big fan of the TV show Crossing Jordan and have always loved the music, so I was very excited to find a CD with the music from the show.
Even if the rest of the Crossing Soundtrack was mediocre I wouldn't be complaining too loudly, but the thing is the rest of the disc ranges is frankly excellent.
Of the men on display on the album I particularly love Vic Chesnutt's take on Dylan's "Buckets of Rain" and Richard Thompson's appropriately scary "Season of the Witch." Marc Anthony Thompson's version of the Kinks' "Days" is good, but every time I hear it, it makes me want to listen to the original.

The Webb Sisters - Daylight Crossing review - Album reviews - Reviews - Music - Virgin Media<
The bumph accompanying this album proudly touts it as a "Rumours for the 21st century", a ludicrously bold claim if ever we heard one - Fleetwood Mac's masterpiece has been aped by many since its 1977 release, not least the band who actually wrote it.
For a couple of Kent-born sisters to take on this musical Goliath deserves some small amount of praise, regardless of whether or not they actually manage it, and first impressions of the band are good - they've even managed to ape Christine McVie's haircut.
And as far as an homage goes, this album isn't bad - from the gentle harmonic vocals which run throughout each of the tracks, the soft piano and acoustic guitar, epic West Coast-style songwriting and what appears to be a genuine desire to recreate the psychedelic, slightly folked-up sound of the late Seventies.

According to ancient custom, when a sailing ship crosses the Equator, all aboard who are making the crossing for the first time must undergo a ceremonial "baptism" in Equatorial waters to mark the occasion.
The event is traditionally overseen by the god of the sea, Neptune, portrayed by someone else on board (generally of high rank or fame, often the ship's captain) who has already made the crossing.
During a mid-1980s voyage, that honor fell to James MacArthur, pictured here wearing his royal purple robes and crown of sea foam and brandishing his magical trident.

The Phantom Tollbooth - Christmas review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The album starts with an instrumental version of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel." In case you doubt, the unusual deep horn tones of the didgeridoo in the background further prove this isn't your usual Christmas album.
The next tune is a lively, traditional Cornish song, "Righteous Joseph," which The Crossing has made their own in a typical Celtic style.
The Crossing's latest is an excellent choice this Christmas season for those ready for some fresh music of both lively Celtic and more laid back traditional sounds.

The twenty-five year old singer/songwriter describes her style as "lyric-based, folk-pop, with a whole lot of small town idealism and one devastating break up thrown in for good measure." Among her influences she is quick to include poet Mary Oliver along with the likes of David Grey and Shawn Colvin.
Hutchinson's new album "The Crossing" produced by Crit Harmon (Martin Sexton, Susan Werner) will establish her place at that refreshing intersection of genres.
The title track for the album is a song about a bridge in Hutchinson's hometown that was mistakenly built higher than the surrounding road.

 Tim O'Brien, The Crossing
Naturally, he runs the risk that some people won't like the particular theme he chooses for an album, be it his Bob Dylan covers of several years ago, or the Celtic/Appalachian thread he follows in The Crossing.
Depicting the plight of Irish children waiting for their parents to claim them in America, the song seems overly obvious and too sentimental, though it's nice to hear Tim and his sister Mollie singing together again.
It also makes us aware that the title of The Crossing refers not only to a crossing of roads, but a crossing of two cultures that produced a distinctive and emotional music bearing traces of the old Celtic sounds, yet having its own distinctive and American voice.

 Big Country - The Crossing
Big Country front man Stuart Adamson got his start with The Skids, one of the few Scottish punk bands to receive wide exposure in this London-dominated genre.
The Skids had a handful of top ten singles in their four years of performing and recording, but after their 1980 album "The Absolute Game" Adamson decided he'd had enough of Skids singer Richard Jobson's virtual artistic control of the band.
The Celtic flavor of their music was brought out on their debut album "The Crossing" by producer Steve Lillywhite, who had done the same service for early '80s Irish breakthrough U2.
