  Crossley Motors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crossley Motors, based in Manchester, England, produced approximately 19,000 high quality cars from 1904 until 1938, 5,500 buses from 1926 until 1958 and 21,000 goods and military vehicles from 1914 to 1945.
Crossley Brothers was set up in 1867 by Francis (1839 - 1897) and William (Sir William from 1909) (1844 - 1911).
Crossley Motors Ltd was first registered on the 11th April 1906 (and re-registered with a different company number in 1910) as the vehicle manufacturing arm of Crossley Brothers.

Crossley Brothers was set up in 1867 by Francis (1839 - 1897) and William (Sir William from 1909) (1844 - 1911) when Francis, with help from his uncle, bought the engineering business of John M Dunlop at Great Marlborough Street in Manchester city centre manufacturing pumps, presses and small steam engines.
Crossley Motors Ltd was first registered on the 11th April 1906 (and re-registered with a different company number in 1910) as the vehicle manufacturing arm of Crossley Brothers originally based in the main factory but in 1907 moving to a nearby site they owned in Napier Street, later changed to Crossley Street, Gorton, Manchester, England.
Over the years more than 100,000 Crossley oil and gas engines have been built and it is a testament to their quality that many of these are still in use to this day.

Crossley Motors Ltd., gas engine manufacturers, produced cars from 1904 to 1937 and commercial vehicles from 1912 to 1956, at Gorton to 1945 and then at Stockport.

The company was acquired by AEC Ltd in 1948 and the Crossley name for motor vehicles ended with closure in 1958.
The Crossley Register of Australia held a Centenary Rally at Binalong NSW between 4th & 7th May 2004, this Rally was to assemble Crossley cars from all over Australia in one week of local runs and social events.

The earliest buses were built as private ventures based on ex WW1 vehicles but later special chassis and complete buses came to dominate the companies output and were the last vehicles to be produced.

The Willys-Overland, Crossley company was founded in the early 1930s by Sir William Letts and Crossley Motors of Manchester.
In the case of Austin, apparently the Austin Motor Company in 1932 formed a gentleman’s agreement with Willys-Overland, Crossley to assemble and market left-hand drive Austins in Germany.
It is believed that at this stage little Willys-Overland, Crossley content was provided apart from manufacturing and assembling the left-hand drive components on the Type RL Saloon models.

This proposal stood for some months before an approach was made by Mr (later Sir) William Letts of Crossley Motors who was concerned that Burnham might be to readily understood as " Burn 'em" and hence to be inappropriate as the address of an aircraft factory!
In addition, The Crossley Motors works between the original Fairey factory and the Manchester o Stockport railway line was taken over as a Government "shadow factory" and, under Fairey management, commenced construction on Bristol Beaufighter night fighters.
After World War One the site was purchased outright by Crossley Motors and cars were produced there until 1934.

This lorry is a Manchester model B1 30/35cwt chassis built at the works of Willys Overland Crossley in Heaton Chapel, Stockport.
Willys Overland Crossley had been set up in 1919 as a joint venture between Willys Overland in the USA and Crossley Motors in the UK to assemble Willys Overland vehicles for the British market.

Crossley's involvement in the commecial vehicles really starts in 1919 when the government started to release a large number of new and used war surplus 25/30hp chassis many of which were converted by third parties to small lorries.
Crossley obviously noticed this hole in the market and bought back a number of chassis themselves for overhaul and sale with or without RAF type bodies.
These were advertised through to 1921 and may have been available much later.

Eric has always had a passion for motor cars and in May 1935 he took an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering with Crossley Motors and attended the Royal Technical College at Salford (which after the War became Salford University).
As the War approached, the Government gave out contracts for armament work and Crossley Motors affiliated with A V ROE.
They were married at Sutton Valence Church in September 1949 and spent their honeymoon motoring through France, getting as far as Marseilles.

Roe of Leeds, another bodybuilder, and Thornycroft, a gearbox manufacturer.
Apart from AEC, the well-known members in the group in Hong Kong should be Thronycroft and Park Royal.
