 The Crossroads
The crossroads is the most popular place to perform a specific hoodoo crossroads ritual to learn a skill -- to play a musical instrument, for instance, or to become proficient at throwing dice, dancing, public speaking, or whatever one chooses.
The crossroads ritual is currently best known in popular American culture through the recent acceptance of a spurious legend that the famous 1930s blues singer Robert Johnson claimed that he had learned how to play guitar by selling his soul to the devil at the crossroads, somewhere in Mississippi.
Hyatt collected many, many accounts of the crossroads ritual in which it was said that on each successive visit to the crossroads (at midnight or dawn, depending on the informant), a different fl animal appears and on the last midnight (or sunrise) the "devil" or "big fl man" appears and fulfills the request.

What's harder is coming to grips with the reality that no matter what you think of her as a musical performer or as an actress, she has more than a spark of genuine likability.
In "Crossroads," her first film star vehicle, she's already beginning to coast on bad habits, like winkling and twinkling adorably and manipulating her preternaturally glossy mouth into a jailbaitish pout.
"Crossroads" is most enjoyable in its most offhand moments, like the early scene in which Spears jumps around her bedroom, clad only in a skimpy cami-and-panties outfit, singing along with gusto to Madonna's "Open Your Heart." Manning -- who played Kirsten Dunst's tough-cookie sidekick in "Crazy/Beautiful" -- sharpens and brightens every scene she's in.

CROSSROADS (Walter Hill's Blues film, NOT Britney Spears' self-indulgent 2002 fluff) is a terrific introduction to a uniquely American musical genre, with a remarkable cast and a dead-on southern 'atmosphere'.
Just such a crossroads happens to be the ultimate destination of Eugene Martone (Ralph Macchio) a young and gifted classical guitarist attending the Julliard School of the Arts.
Reminiscent of the song of the devil going down to Georgia and getting into a guitar-playing contest, the champion of which wins a soul, Macchio's character has a play-off with the Devil, played by Steve Vai, for the soul of an old blues-man who sold his soul for fame and is now facing his mortality.

Robert Johnson recorded only 29 songs on a total of 42 tracks in two recording sessions in San Antonio, Texas in November 1936 and Dallas, Texas in June 1937.
A recurring legend says that Johnson sold his soul to the Devil at the crossroads of U.S. Highway 61 and U.S. Highway 49 in Clarksdale, Mississippi in exchange for prowess in playing the guitar.
Johnson had also listened to Leroy Carr, who was probably the most popular male blues singer of the time, and based several songs on the records of the urban blues recording stars Kokomo Arnold (source for both "Sweet Home Chicago" and "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom") and Peetie Wheatstraw.

After the enormous success of her eponymous debut album in 1988, enhanced by her appearance at a Nelson Mandela tribute concert that same year, it was never going to be easy for Tracy Chapman to deliver a similar bolt from the singer-songwriter blues a year later on this, her "tricky" second album.
It starts with the brilliantly enthusiastic and up beat 'crossroads' and then Tracy addresses some serious 'matters of the heart.' To anyone with experience of love the songs "bridges" and "be careful of my heart" are simply spell-binding.
These songs have a softer, more subtle feel to them than "Behind The Wall", for instance, yet this is still a moving album, and well worth owning.

Tracy Chapman's self-titled debut album of 1988 was an incredibly tough act to follow, but the folk-rocker delivered an inspired sophomore effort with Crossroads.
While it falls short of the excellence of her stunning debut, Crossroads is a heartfelt, honest offering that's well worth obtaining.
Much of the time, however, Chapman isn't going for immediacy -- introspective and subtle songs like "Bridges," "Be Careful of My Heart," and "All That You Have Is Your Soul" require at least several listens in order to be fully appreciated.
