Academy of Charter Schools in Adams 12 School District will be hosting a week-long event entitled "A Day in the Life of a Charter School Student." Participants will be given the opportunity to shadow a student for all, a portion or an hour of a typical school day.

In the early stages of the charter school movement, most academies were not designed specifically to serve students with special learning needs.
But for the Jorgensen and Howe families, it was the Crossroads Charter Academy in Big Rapids where they finally found their children's needs being met.
Ormand Hook, principal of Crossroads, was a bit concerned that his school would not be able to meet the needs of A.J. However, after discussing what his school could offer, the Jorgensens decided to enroll their son in the third grade again for the 1998-99 school year.

Capital City Alliance (CCA) announced that 60 percent of the top 50 Baton Rouge companies now have written policies prohibiting discrimination against employees based upon sexual orientation, up from 38 percent in October of 2002.
The increase was noted in a recent survey performed by CCA of the top 50 companies.
CCA Chairman Joe Traigle praised the significant progress that Baton Rouge is making in becoming known as a more open and tolerant city.

The Cougars were the first charter school in the country to win a state title in any sport when they captured their first crown during Monroe’s junior season in 2004.
Monroe was Crossroads’ highest finisher and took seventh place overall in a time of 19:30.75 at the 2004 state cross country championships (11/6) while earning all-state laurels for the first time.
She is the first student-athlete from Crossroads to sign a national letter-of-intent at a NCAA Division II school or higher.

The mission of the MRWA is to preserve, protect and enhance the natural, historic and cultural resources of the Muskegon River Watershed through educational and scientific initiatives, while supporting positive economic development, agricultural and quality of life initiatives of organizations working in the river watershed.

With a donation from the Mecosta County Audubon Club and a match from the Wege Foundation, the MRWA was able to purchase more native plants to supplement the 2004 planting at Mitchell Creek Park and install signs informing the public where the plants are growing.

During the 2000-2001 school year, charter school students improved 43 percent on the 4th grade MEAP reading test compared to a 10.1 percent improvement among students in traditional public schools; 4th grade math and 7th grade reading test improvements showed a similar trend.
The study found that the charter schools served students who were more likely to be from lower-income families, and the schools themselves operated with less money than other public schools.
Although the average passing rates on state tests for CMU charter school students were lower than the state average, 14 of the schools performed better on state tests than other schools in their district.
