	Pedestrian Crosswalk Safety
		Data is given on the number of pedestrians interviewed, their gender and age, the average number of times they used the crosswalk per week, and whether they had had or had seen an accident or near-miss involving a pedestrian at the crosswalk.
		The evaluation was based on measurements of the behavior of drivers and pedestrians using the crosswalk, opinions of the pedestrians using the crosswalk and the conspicuity of the crosswalk to unwarned drivers.
		Accident statistics were not collected as part of the evaluation because study of the accident data in the area of the crosswalk, from 1996 to 1998, indicated that the number of accidents occurring during the evaluation period was likely to be insufficient to reach a reliable conclusion.

	PEDSAFE: Zebra Crosswalk Markings
		Incremental improvements to crosswalk design and increase of aggressive driving throughout New York City created a situation where the crosswalk marking used to delineate safe walk-to-school routes (the MUTCD “ladder”) was the same as the marking for dangerous intersections, sending a conflicting message to school children and others using the city’s sidewalks.

	How the LightGuard System Works
		The LightGuard System alerts motorists that they are approaching an occupied crosswalk using amber LED flashing lights embedded in the roadway surface on both sides of a crosswalk facing oncoming traffic.
		The driver, when approaching the crosswalk, is to slow their vehicle speed and look for pedestrian activity in the crosswalk.
		If there is a pedestrian either waiting at the crosswalk’s entrance to cross or crossing in the crosswalk, the driver is to yield and allow the pedestrian to cross before proceeding.

		Because the intersection is not painted as a crosswalk, it is not a crosswalk.
