2004 SPS Outstanding Student Awards for Undergraduate Research
Crotales are center-weighted, tuned cymbals that are found in the percussion section of most orchestras.
In this study, the acoustic and vibrational properties of crotales in the octaves from Cs to Cg are theoretically and experimentally investigated.
The acoustic spectra of the crotales are compared to theoretical predictions for flat circular plates clamped at the center as well as for clamped annular plates.

Crotales are tuned metal discs that are constructed mainly of bronze or brass.
Crotales are generally available in octave sets and are accurately pitched unlike finger cymbals which do not have a definite pitch.
Finger cymbals are lighter than crotales, smaller and are generally found in pairs.

 Antique Cymbals???
Crotales often sound like a glockenspiel to the untrained ear, and even longtime percussionists can sometimes be confused.
Actually, I thought anticque cymbals and crotales were two different things...When I played antique cymbal in my wind ensemble, we had this tiny little cymbal that has this piercing ringing sound that resembles people banging forks together.
Crotales, also which I played, are pitched, and don't even sound close to glocks...

Crotales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crotales, sometimes called antique cymbals, are percussion instruments consisting of small, tuned bronze or brass disks.
Crotales are treated as transposing instruments; music for crotales is written two octaves lower than the sounding pitch.
One of the earliest uses of crotales in the orchestral repertoire is Claude Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune.

 Innovative Percussion
The composer states that the general premise of the work is the ability of the marimbist to accompany himself with longer resonating metallic instruments.
After a brief interlude of cymbals, crotales and vibraphone, the sixteenth-note figures return in the marimba, with punctuating, long tones on the crotales.
This section continues for a while, finally yielding to a transitional segment of linear figures in the marimba, culminating in an explosive run to the top of the instrument.

Fortunately, while pursuing this line of theory he discovered a better way to make crotales and actually designed a set of crotales that should sound better and be less expensive to manufacture than those currently available.
While Brad was trying to understand the crotale theoretically Cherie resorted to finite element analysis to understand how these bells work.
The result of their work was that we now have an excellent understanding of what the important parameters are in manufacturing crotales, and the two students have published an article in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America explaining the physics of crotales.

 The GPO Tuned Percussion
For some reason the GPO Crotales are an exception to this: you may play at the written range and the transposition has already been done for you.
Unless you are writing for a top professional orchestra, it is wise not to write for instruments which may not be available (probably for reasons of expense).
I suppose piano could be used more frequently than any, then perhaps celesta; after that most instruments should have few appearances, especially crotales (=ancient cymbals) which give a one-off exotic touch to the music.

Cymbals comprise an entire family of idiophones that also include gongs, tam-tams, crotales and other similar instruments usually made from bronze.
Gongs generally are played with very large and heavy mallets which often use hockey pucks as the core material, with yarn being wrapped around them to eliminate the click sound the raw puck would deliver.
Crotales, gongs, bell discs, thunder sheets and finger cymbals are all types of cymbal accessories.

 Idiophones Percussion Instruments
The crotales are a set of small metal discs three to five inches in diameter, either mounted onto a wooden board shaped like a piano keyboard or held by a leather strap.
They are played with metal beaters and give an effect similar to that of the steel drum, or if you could imagine a very large crotale.
The thunder sheet has a very specific use, which is to simulate roaring thunder (though a similar effect can also be produced through some of the lower-pitched membranophones like the bass drum or the timpani).

Record Box. A Fascinating Programme - Joseph Gramley plays music for percussion, reviewed by Patric Standford
The prospect of just over an hour of percussion playing may seem daunting to any who feel the need for greater variety in their listening repertoire, but Joseph Gramley has assembled a fascinating programme of relatively short pieces (the best of the inventory is invariably short and succinct), most of which are for solo marimba.
The most substantial piece is Visitations by New York composer Charles Griffin, in which Gramley plays keyboards, marimba, vibraphone, crotales and various untuned percussion.
There are great advantages in working with a composer, but here the extended time span (the piece lasts fifteen minutes) is too much for the weak material, lacking drive and purpose and taking far too long to arrive at its modest climactic point [listen -- track 8, 11:30-12:54].

The crotale, known as "krotalon" in Greek and "crotalum" in Latin, is a kind of fork-shaped castanet, with one mobile leaf fixed on a hinge that hits the other when the instrument is shaken.
Crotales were used in pairs, mainly during ceremonies devoted to Cybele, the goddess of nature and fertility, or to accompany dancing.

The slow movement comes in with metallic resonances from all the percussionists, the soloist playing on vibraphone at first with a mallet in one hand and a bow in the other, the three orchestral percussionists bowing on vibraphones and crotales (small tuned cymbals), and the timpanist playing with crotales on the drumskin.
First the strings interject, and then the movement turns into a flow from the soloist on vibraphone and crotales, the latter joined by harp and celesta, and by the woodwinds moving the music on to a climax.
When this has passed, the soloist goes back to the rolled marimba fifths of the very beginning, this time drawing in not only his fellow percussionists but the harp and celesta.
