Lee’s new film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, is being marketed as both a loving homage and a redemption of the alleged excesses of the HK martial arts movie, a questionable approach since excess — in the larger-than-life characters, stylized violence, and dazzling shifts of tone — is a primary lure of these films.

The choreography of the action scenes in "Crouching Tiger" was designed by Yuen Wo-Ping, whose credits include "The Matrix," and who understands that form is more important than function.
In "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," Lee and Wo-Ping give us a scene of startling daring and beauty, when two protagonists cling to the tops of tall, swaying trees and swing back and forth during a sword fight.
Long rehearsal and training went into their scenes, but what's unusual about "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is the depth and poetry of the connecting story, which is not just a clothesline for action scenes, but has a moody, romantic and even spiritual nature.

Salon.com Arts & Entertainment | "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"
Director Ang Lee's brand of restraint isn't always a virtue, and even in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" it sometimes feels as if he's stretching the story's significant moments on principle, rather than letting the movie find a quicker, more natural rhythm.
But "Crouching Tiger" still manages to stoke a satisfying glow, probably because its pristine lyricism suits the material, a romantic adventure set in ancient China that enfolds themes of thievery, loyalty, duty and unrequited love.
"Crouching Tiger" is, of course, an arted-up martial arts film, but it grooves more on the tradition of Asian swordplay movies popular in the '50s and '60s than on the kung fu movies that found favor in the '70s.
