What I did for the crows nest was as follows: I took a pop can and cut a strip that was as wide as the crows nest was tall.
Then I bent the strip around the outside of the crows nest and cut the excess off (it overlapped just a mm or so), glued it with CA glue, then puttied the joint and sanded it smooth.
