In the study of mythology and religion, a trickster is a god, goddess, spirit or human who breaks the rules of the gods or nature, sometimes maliciously (for example, Loki) but usually with ultimately positive effects.
In many North American Indian mythologies, the coyote spirit stole fire from the gods (or stars or sun) and is more of a trickster than a culture hero.
This is primarily because of other stories involving the coyote spirit; Prometheus was an intellectual Titan, whereas coyote is usually seen as a jokester and prankster.

For the purposes of this article, therefore, we use the word "mythology" to refer to stories that, while they may or may not be strictly factual, reveal fundamental truths and insights about human nature, often through the use of archetypes.
Mythology is alive and well in the modern age through urban legends, scientific mythology, and many other ways.

Young adult crows eventually break away and establish nests and territories of their own, but it is not uncommon for those adult birds to fly in suddenly on an afternoon, say, for a visit with Mom and Dad that can last a few hours or several days.
And although crows mate for life, an adult crow will return to the parental home if a mate dies or its nest is unsuccessful, that is, if its eggs are eaten by raccoons or squirrels, or its fledglings are picked off by owls or hawks.

 Ted Hughes and Crow
Crow comes complete with all the mythological and folk-loric accretions which crows have gathered through their long existence, and, of course, all the natural characteristics of the crow species.
Crow was subjected to teaching and to tests, he was meant to learn humanity and wholeness, to develop a soul, but only in poems published in a later poetic sequence (Cave Birds) did he achieve real progress on his quest.
Crow, however, is a very modern version of the Trickster Cycle fitting well with the surrealist and absurd sentiments of other twentieth century writers such as Kafka; of artists such as Francis Bacon; and of some of the Eastern European Poets whose works Hughes has helped to make available in translation.
