Topic: Crowbar (album)

In the News (Sat 2 Jun 12)

  Crowbar - Heavy Duty
The band’s debut album, Bad Manors and their live performances on a cross Canada tour had won legions of fans for the band and many were anxiously waiting for the band’s next album.
On this album, the band moved away from their high energy blues styled songs and tried their hand unsuccessfully at psychedelic music in the style of the Grateful Dead.
Heavy Duty was the band’s last album for Daffodil Records with a move to Epic for the next album but this was the beginning of the end for Crowbar and after one more album the band split up.

This first album was seen as being underproduced by Crowbar yet it gave them a certain amount of recognition in the underground.
Their debut album was produced by Eli Ball but didn't get released until a year later in 1996 because of the legal problems of the band name Penalty.
Their self titled album was released in 1997 on Mayhem/Fierce records and can be described as an aggressive metal album with influences of thrash mixed with the heavier moments of Black Sabbath not to mention the abundance of double bass which gives this band an edge.

Crowbar's roots can be traced back almost as far back as Roly Greenway's career.
Crowbar was the first act to launch a record in the legislation era (a law designating the implementation of 30% mandatory Canadian content by all radio stations) with the single "Oh, What A Feeling".
As part of Pierre Trudeau's bid to gain the youth vote, his wife Margaret Trudeau who was a Crowbar fan, asked the band to become the opening act of Trudeau's re-election campaign in 1972.

With their 8th album in their 15 year existence, Crowbar is one of the few bands that refuse to evolve or progress beyond the sound of their debut.
At their best when slowing down to a heart stopping lumber, Crowbar’s weight isn’t purely physical anymore, lightened considerably since the Todd Strange days, but are still are heavy musically, as Crowbar have a consistently molten crawl that’s rife with pain and angst.
The repressive heaviness of Crowbar is due to their ability to play massive yet restrictive riffs that seem to implode upon the listener with the gravity of a fl hole.

Crowbar - Odd Fellow's Rest | Album Review @ Music-Critic.com : the source for music reviews, interviews, articles, and ...
At a time when thrash metal was at its peak with death metal fast on its heels in becoming the most dominant trend in underground metal, a time when speed was essential for heavy music, The Slugs emerged in the N.O. underground pounding out slow, bonecrushingly heavy tunes that few knew what to think of.
Crowbar’s involvement with Down shines through for the first time on "New Man Born", giving the track an oppressive southern-fried edge in the same spirit of Down’s "Bury Me In Smoke" or "Lifer", albeit much heavier.
Were in not for Crowbar’s habit of consistently putting out the some of the best heavy music to be had, I would brand this cd a classic for the ‘90’s, just as Metallica’s (R.I.P.) Master Of Puppets and Slayer’s Reign In Blood were for the 80’s.

Musically, it is a combination of unspeakably heavy drop-tuned riffs and straight-8 drumming (as opposed to blastbeats) with either clean or shouted vocals-it is the lack of overpowering speed and vomitorium vocals that distinctly differentiates it from death metal.
CROWBAR and sludge are a band and genre ready to come into their own as one of the great, long-lived crossover bands like MOTORHEAD and AC/DC-enjoyed not just by metal fans but punks and hardcore kids as well.
Now the rest of the album is full of decent songs, but it is these two and the closer that make this album what it is. As I mentioned in my review of the new Judas Priest, this is all about lead roles and a solid supporting cast.

Crowbar’s legacy of “fat guy metal” came about partially because of big Kirk Windstein and a bassist, Todd Strange, that made him look small.

Crowbar's previous albums, especially their most recent, 1996's _Broken Glass_, have concentrated on churning out sludgecore which, though always excellent, has stuck to riffs which are primarily percussive and vocals which are low and guttural.
This album has seen Crowbar take their music to new levels of brilliance by incorporating tons of atmosphere and a huge amount of melody, especially in Todd Strange's vocals.
However, Crowbar aren't in this for the money; they're in it for the music, and if their integrity helped make _Odd Fellows Rest_ as good as it is, then we should be thankful they aren't greedy.

The First impression is that some of the album is much more melodic than previous Crowbar stuff, and the opening track "Planets Collide" almost heads in the direction of Paegan Terrorism Tactics, while the intro riff to album closer "On Frozen Ground" sounds like it could have been taken from "'Kitestring".

The bonus tracks on Spike, for example, show you an album that was very heavily arranged and produced in its earliest stages, and some songs like ‘Satellite’ and ‘This Town’ take on completely different identities.
There’s an anecdote I love from the liner notes to Spike, where Elvis talks about being in the studio next door to Burt Bacharach and inviting him to come listen to ‘Satellite,’ which he thought was a direct lift from Bacharach’s arranging style.
It’s basically an instrumental, and on the original album there were printed lyrics for the song.
