Surowiecki explains why the wisdom of crowds works and the factors necessary to make it work well (and how it sometimes breaks down).
This anecdote begins the fascinating book The Wisdom of Crowds, by James Surowiecki (2004), which documents that often a group as a whole has as good as or better information than any individual expert in that group.
The correct weight was 1,198 pounds, and the average guess was 1,197 — more accurate than the winning estimate.

Amazon.co.uk: Far from the Maddening Crowds: Music
What encouraged me to purchase 'Far from the Maddening Crowds' was the strength of Chicane's second album 'Behind the Sun', which I bought beforehand and can also highly recommend.
Having got it in July last year, 'Far from the Maddening Crowds' is still probably the most listened to of all my CDs and quite simply a masterpiece.
Personally I believe this is excellent music to have on in the car or to listen to at home after a particularly stressful day, chilling you out while at the same time not sending you to sleep.

CD Review: Chicane, "Far From the Maddening Crowds"
Far From the Maddening Crowds is a collection of ambient dance tracks which would make sense as DJ white-labels, but unless you're a hard-core electronic music / rave fan I wouldn't entirely recommend the album.
Pretty apt title for this disc, considering it's the crowd factor that dictates why I don't go to clubs nearly as much as I used to.
But hey -- now, thanks to Chicane, you can have a rave right in your own living room.

Telegraph Travel New Zealand: Far from the maddening crowds
It is a place of elements, where your memories are suffused with rushing wind and running water - from the soft lapping of mountain lakes, to the burbling of trout-filled rivers down to the crashing seas where porpoises and penguins are happy to let you share their habitat.
There are few places left on earth where you can walk down a five-mile beach with only your footprints and the surf boom for company and New Zealand is far less stultifying than a beach-hut hideaway in the Caribbean or the Maldives.

So far, for us as an institution, we believe that this has been a successful approach to beginning to focus some areas of research and for us to become a significant player.

 Chicane
As moody and instrumental as Robert Miles's big Europop hit "Children," Chicane's Far from the Maddening Crowds features coolly delicate orchestral pop arrangements, acoustic-guitar interludes, the sounds of waves mussing a beach, and -- always -- the throbby, four-to-the-floor pump beat that drives dreamy Eurodisco.
No, just savor the ease with which he recycles the always lighthearted, soft-melodic elements of his lush dance music, 72 minutes of sonic idealism in which quiet and softness are the theme as well as the form.
Chicane varies his sonic components hardly at all, so there's no point trying to distinguish one mix of "Offshore" and "Sunstroke" from another (the CD includes two of each), or figuring out where "Early" and "Already There" stop and "From Blue to Green," "Leaving Town," and "The Drive Home" begin.

Slate is running a fascinating dialogue between Malcolm Gladwell of Blink and Jim Surowiecki of The Wisdom of Crowds which weaves together the concepts of rapid cognition gut-based decision making with deliberate decision making as well as the value of one expert's decision versus a group of average people's decisions.
Because of this, it would be against the spirit of his work to quickly characterize his book as the standard neoconservative take on the culture and politics of race and, in the name of convenience, juxtapose him with a more left-wing pundit so as to reduce the argument to a simple choice.
