GLASS IN THE PAST By Gordon Bock
Though crown glass was made up to the 1850s, it could not supply the need for bigger panes created by a growing population.
The glass that could was cylinder glass (also called broad glass or sheet glass), and it dominated this industry for the rest of the century.
When cutting glass for window repairs, the point to remember is that cylinder glass has a smooth side, once the outside of the cylinder, and a rough side, the former inside.

 Is glass liquid or solid?
It is sometimes said that glass in very old churches is thicker at the bottom than at the top because glass is a liquid, and so over several centuries it has flowed towards the bottom.
Glass can be made from pure silica, but fused silica has a high glass transition point at around 1200° C which makes it difficult to mould into panes or bottles.
Glass such as Pyrex (used for test-tubes and ovenware) is usually based on boro-silicates or alumino-silicates, which withstand heating better and typically have a higher glass transition temperature.

With regard to the technical difference between the iridescent finish of carnival glass and the later luster finishes, the former was achieved by exposing the glass while hot and held on the punty, reheated at the glory hole and then sprayed with metallic compound, often of a toxic nature.
The later luster finishes were achieved with metallic resinates applied to the cold glass by spraying or brushing and afterwards firing at a lower temperature than the previous method.
