  Arcadayn: Slavery
Slaves are protected by property laws which, in theory, require slave-owners to treat their slaves as well as they would free peasants or servants.
The slaves of foreign visitors are allowed into the country, and retain the status held in their homeland, but may not be sold here without permission from the ducal court.
Slaves here are usually slaves by capture or birth; the death penalty is used instead of slavery by law.

Children of slave mothers were slaves, and children of free mothers were free regardless of the status of the father.
The slave was not able to own property according to the law, and this meant that the money with which he purchased his freedom had always belonged to his master.
Crimes committed by a slave were prosecuted by the court, and, if a slave was murdered, this case was prosecuted by the court as if the victim had been a free man. The law also made a more concerted attempt to protect the slave against mistreatment by his master.

 Slavery in French Illinois
Slave marriages were not recognized as being legally or morally binding, so that masters had the power to sell husband or wife separately at will or to force married slave women to submit to his sexual advances without feeling that he had in any way committed adultery or wronged their slave husbands.
Similarly the bonds between slave parents and their children found no social support, so that the master was completely free to separate mother and child, even taking a nursing infant from its mother's breast in order to complete a sale that was advantageous to him.
Most slave couples were both owned by the same master and were identified under his surname, and many of the slave children whose baptisms were recorded were the offspring of parents whose marriages had been solemnized by the priest.

Though the crown was preoccupied with regulating how slaves were treated by their masters\emdash this was especially articulated in the slave code promulgated in 1789 concerning the treatment, education and well-being of slaves\emdash the issue became fraught with contradictions.
Even though the Spaniards were horrified by the rebellion, it is evident that the slaves were not necessarily endeavouring to undo the entire colonial system since one of the fl rebel leaders, Jo s\'e9 de la Caridad Gonz\'e1lez had told the slaves that the crown was granting them their liberty.
Thus the slave was closely questioned about whether or not he had had illicit relations with his master's wife, but he denied the allegation, stating that h e had never been her lover and had never aspired to the role.

 History of Amazonia
The crown's response was to take over control of the 61 mission villages and implement the first coherent state policy for the settlement and exploitation of the area, in the form of a Directorate in 1755.
This new agriculture policy arose as a result of the resistance of Amerindians to work as slaves (and their decline in numbers through disease and decimation), and to move away from the `extractive system' of the Amazonian economy based on hunting, fishing and gathering.
However, the consistent dominance of extractive activities, the unreliability of Indian labour supply, and the Crown's difficulties with settlers resisting demands to maintain a legal framework and pay wages proved to be the downfall of the colonial involvement in the area.

The prominent virtue of this list is high-mindedness, which, as being a kind of ideal self-respect, is regarded as the crown of all the other virtues, depending on them for its existence, and itself in turn tending to intensify their force.
The list seems to be more a deduction from the formula than a statement of the facts on which the formula itself depends, and Aristotle accordingly finds language frequently inadequate to express the states of excess or defect which his theory involves (for example in dealing with the virtue of ambition).
Aristotle regards the slave as a piece of live property having no existence except in relation to his master.
